Tehama County Medical Guide- 2015 3 We know the teenage years can be a tough transi on-for both teens and their parents. Lots of rapid changes in our mind, body, and emo ons occur during this me. When you add the pressures of try- ing to fit in, to get good grades, and to always please your parents, the teenage years can become chal- lenging for anyone. Before, during, and a er the teenage years, par- ents play a vital role in crea ng a comfortable environment that allows for smooth transi ons. Ac- cording to the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), com- munica on is the easiest and most efficient way for parents to help. What to Look For With all of the above men oned stressors, teens are at a higher risk for engaging in various self-de- struc ve behaviors. According to the AAFP these following signs may signal an issue: Agitated behavior Rapid weight loss or gain A Drop in school grades Lack of mo va on or em- pathy Fa gue or loss of energy Low self-esteem Trouble falling or staying asleep What to Do As a parent, if you see any of the aforemen oned warning signs, be alert. If these signs are ignored, the nega ve behavior may spiral out of control. We all know problems are easier to deal with before they spi- ral out of control, so take the me to talk to your teen. Communica- on can help your teenager discov- er what they are feeling and how they are making their decisions. Just lending an ear to listen to your child can make a world of differ- ence; be pa ent, understanding, and posi ve to help your teenager feel good about him or himself. According to the AAFP, teens are reac onary by nature. This means their self-esteem, or how they feel about themselves, is based in large part by how their parents react and interact with them. The AAFP reminds and encourages all parents to talk with someone if you are concerned about any poten al warning signs your teen may be showing.
