Start eating healthier. Go to church on a more regular basis. You know the drill. It's a new year and it's time for a few resolutions. Or is it? I made a resolution to myself last year that I wasn't going to make any more resolutions. They bring about frustration, anxiety and depression just to name a few unsavory emotion- al pitfalls. I rarely turned the page to February on my calendar before I broke one or all of each of my New Year's resolutions in the past. So rather than wasting a good couple of weeks stopping or starting something I wasn't going to continue, I just simply didn't. Well not anymore that is. Don't get me wrong. It's not that I don't set goals for myself any longer or that I don't try to improve certain areas of my life. I just decided to take the pressure off and take things as they come. My new philosophy? Work on today without dwell- ing on yesterday and without thinking ahead to tomorrow. I've made a great number of CAROLINA WEATHER BOB'S www.shelbyweather.blogspot.com Email: carolinaweather@yahoo.com METEOROLOGIST ROBERT GAMBLE The Discussion... Warmer But Damp...We have a warm up somewhat, but the clouds and rain are on the way back too. It looks like an extended cloudy period with periods of rain over the week- end and into next week. The temperatures will be a little above normal, but thanks to all the clouds and northeast winds we shouldn't get too warm. Right after the weekend storm another southern slider will be heading this way, so we are getting active. But this is January and sunny, warm days are few and far between. By the middle of the month, the jet stream could carve out a huge storm near us and pull down another arctic airmass like we just had. I'm sure we'll be talking about our first winter storm here soon. spiritual resolutions in the past and I've had about as much suc- cess with those as I have with my previous New Year's resolu- tions. I've vowed to pray more each day only to falter at some point, at times even skipping an entire day altogether. Read- ing the Bible twice in one year? Didn't quite live up to expecta- tions on that one either. There's others but I think you get the point by now. The Apostle Peter drew a line in the sand one day when he stated unequivocally that he would never disown Christ in any way, shape or form (Matt. 26:33). He was determined, dedicated, and devoted to keeping his pledge. He also blew it before the sun came up the following day. Peter found out and I'm fi nding out that a change in nature doesn't just happen over night because we decide it so. It is a long and drawn out process, a lifetime's worth. One in which we will struggle with and fail at times. Here's the kicker though. Jesus knew Peter wouldn't keep with Richard Prow rpcrosswords@gmail.com his vow just as He knows that we will not fulfi ll all of ours. Yet He forgave Peter and He will forgive us. So my resolution for the year (okay I am making one) is to put more faith in what Christ has said He will do and less in what I think or hope I might. Through A Woman's Eyes By Martha Hynson mhynson1@gmail.com Do ou Belong In Kinderg Do You Belong In Kindergarten?ten? When someone asks me what I do and I tell them I teach kindergarten, they often shake their heads and say they would never have the patience to work with small children every day. I'm not so sure, though, that it's really very different from working with adults. As we head toward a new year, I realize more and more each day that I belong in kindergarten. Not because I have a lot of patience, but because I have a lot to learn. You might be surprised to find that you, too, would feel at home in kindergarten. Take the following quiz to see how you would fit in. Do you like to be first? Kindergarteners do. If you've ever tried to move a group of five year olds from one place to another, I bet you've heard the following kindergarten mantra: He cutted! It's a uni- versal cry meaning someone who I think should be behind me is now in front of me and I don't think it's fair. If this is a problem for you, just remember this standard teacher reply…it doesn't matter because we're all going to the same place. Okay, so adults are not usually all going to the same place, but you have to think figuratively here. LOW HIGH COLD WARM SHOWERS P. Kindergarteners do. In kindergarten it's called tattling. It works like this. You may have been breaking rules all morning but, suddenly, you notice someone else doing something they shouldn't and you feel obliged to announce it loudly. If you find yourself doing this, it might help to tell yourself what I sometimes say to my students- you just worry about you. If this doesn't work, and in kindergarten it generally doesn't, you might try something a little different. When a child comes to me tattling on another child, I often simply say, "Thank you for telling me." This usually satisfies them and they go on their merry way. I've found it works pretty well as an adult, too. If I get really frustrated with someone, I can tell God all about it and know that He will listen. In fact, he really wants to hear how I feel. In my spirit, I hear Him say, "Thank you for telling me," and somehow I feel much better and ready to go on my way again. Do you find yourself thinking about what you want to say instead of listening to others? Kindergarteners do. They often talk constantly, blurting out whatever's on their minds. When someone else is talking and a child is waving his hand in the air wanting to say something, I explain that he isn't hearing what's being said because he's too busy thinking about what he wants to say. Oops! Ever been guilty of that one? I have! Maybe we need a reminder like I give my kids. Look in the mirror. What do you see? God gave us two ears and one mouth. We need to listen more than we talk. Are you starting to think you might fit in well, at least part of the time? I do, and I bet I'm not the only one. We all have times when we act like kindergarteners. That's why it's important to ask yourself one more question. Are you quick to forgive? Kindergarteners are. When one child has done something to hurt another, I tell the offender to apologize and ask if the other child is okay. I then tell them to ask if there is any- thing they can do to make it better. More often than not, the offended one will say, "You can give me a hug." A hug is given and the two usually run off to play together. Yes, I'm sure God has placed me in kindergarten because I still have a lot to learn! COMPETITIVE PRICING! COMPETITIVE PRICING!
