"We'll be directing all the visi- tors to enter through the main entrance on West King Street (Business Hwy. 74). It's a well- marked route, allowing cars to easily move through Mountain Rest, so families can enjoy this Christmas Eve tradition", said Jackie Barnette, Public Works Director for the City. In memory of departed loved ones, a luminary will be placed at each gravesite, with addi- tional seasonal themed displays throughout Mountain Rest. Over 6000 luminaries will be lit within the 27 acres, with Christmas music provided from the land- mark Bell Tower. For additional information visit www.cityofkm. com or call 704-734-0333. shelbyinfo.com 011 shelbyinfo.com Les Roark Receives The "Fred Blackley Keep Shelby Beautiful 2011 Service Award" Keep Shelby Beautiful presented the "Fred Blackley Keep Shelby Beautiful 2011 Service Award" to Les Roark at its annual awards luncheon on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 held at the Don Gibson Theatre. Mayor Stan Anthony made the award presentation to Les before an audience of family, friends, and City officials. Mayor Anthony stated that "Les is deserving of this award because of his commitment to enhance and improve the City of Shelby's beauty for the past 50 years. It all begin when as a City Councilman, Les, worked to establish the Appearance Commission in 1972, which today is known as the Keep Shelby Beautiful Commission. Les believed that such a com- mission would help to promote the general welfare of the citi- zens of Shelby. Because of Fred Blackley, for whom the award is named, with Mr. Roark anniversary in January. Because of his dedication and love for Shelby, the mis- sion of Keep Shelby Beautiful to enhance the quality of life for Shelby's citizens through beautification will continue to grow for generations to come. The supper event was held in the fellowship hall at Bethel Baptist Church in Shelby, from 2 to 6 p.m. Mae was born December 17th, 1921 and raised seven children, with her much loved husband Jim, on a sharecropper farm in New House. She worked as a laborer in the fields and orchards, as well as other jobs to provide for her family. Here she is, surrounded with lots of love from her children, grand- children, and great grandchildren. Other family members and friends joined the momentous occasion for this very special lady. –M.
