The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y., Friday, April 10, 2015 2 By Rory MacDonald- Gauthier TV Media W inter may have come and gone here in North America, but for the citizens of Westeros, winter is still coming, and at an alarming rate. Dragons have evolved from myth to threat, self-proclaimed kings have been disposed of, and the safety of the realm is at stake. Luckily for us, the much-antici- pated return of "Game of Thrones" is in sight. The new season of the critically ac- claimed fantasy drama pre- mieres Sunday, April 12, on HBO. For those unaware, "Game of Thrones" is the television adaptation of author George R.R. Martin's seven-part fanta- sy novel series, A Song of Ice and Fire. While the first book in the series, "A Game of Thrones," was released in 1996, there has been little in- formation presented as to when the sixth novel, "The Winds of Winter," will be re- leased. In January, Martin's publisher stated that there was no new information on the expected delivery date of "The Winds of Winter," but it likely won't be in 2015. Since then, Martin has can- celed several appearances at various conventions, stating that he has too much to work on. Optimistic or not, fans hold mixed feelings — the demand for new content is high, but the necessity of that content being flawless is greater. And let's be honest — while Mar- tin has joked that every time someone asks him when the next book will be completed he kills a Stark, we've learned not to poke the proverbial bear. It's important to remember that Jon, bastard by birth, is still half a Stark by blood. As for the Stark children who are still breathing, Arya (Maisie Williams, "Robot Chicken"), rumored to be dead, is in fact on her way across the Narrow Sea to the free city of Braavos, and Sansa (Sophie Turner, "The Thirteenth Tale," 2013) has fled to the Eyrie with the aid of Petyr Baelish (Aidan Gillen, "The Wire"). Still AWOL and believed to be dead, Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright, "The Awakening," 2011) and Rickon (Art Parkinson, "Dracu- la Untold," 2014) won't be making an appearance in sea- son 5. This season will also expand upon the Martell family, which rules the independent nation of Dorne. The "Sand Snakes," a group of bastard daughters of Prince Oberyn Martell (Pedro Pascal, "Graceland"), seek ret- ribution for the death of their father. Obara Sand (Keisha Castle-Hughes, "The Almighty Johnsons"), Nymeria Sand (Jessica Henwick, "Silk") and Tyene Sand (Rosabell Laurenti Sellers, "Mia and Me") will spend the bulk of season 5 plotting, misleading and elimi- nating all those who stand in the way of providing justice for their slain father. Speaking of justice, season 5 will explore the responsibili- ty of power in Daenerys Tar- garyen (Emilia Clarke, "Dom Hemingway," 2013), who is struggling to keep the peace in her conquered establishments. In retaliation of her forced au- thority and dragons murdering innocent civilians, a group of rebels known as the Sons of the Harpy begins a shadow war against Daenerys and her military. She may not be alone in this struggle, however, as one Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage, "X-Men: Days of Fu- ture Past," 2014) will find him- self upon Daenerys' shores af- ter fleeing Westeros at the end of season 4. In a recent interview with the Oxford Union, HBO's "Game of Thrones" creators Dan Weiss and David Benioff confirmed that once this sea- son wraps up, the show and books will be on par. Robynwood Home 2 x 2 coverstory Sophie Turner and Aidan Gillen as seen in "Game of Thrones" Bridging the gap 'Game of Thrones' plot is about to catch up with the novels By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: I would like to know if "Beauty and the Beast" will be back on. A: It will be back on, and will remain on for quite a while. CW pulled a pretty odd trick with this one. The first two seasons each had 22 episodes and premiered in the fall. But this past fall, when season 3 should have premiered, there was no sign of it, and no word from the network on when it would be back. It was only in February, four months after the season should have premiered, that the network announced that it would return on May 21. As if to apologize for the delay, CW renewed it for a fourth season at the same time. That sounds like a pretty good deal, except season 3 will only have 13 episodes instead of 22. If the fourth sea- son is short as well, that means that committing to the third and fourth seasons at once only results in four more episodes than a single full season would have. This all sounds very diabolical, but of course it probably isn't. It seems as if the main decision was to switch "Beauty and the Beast" from a fall show to a summer show for season 3, and generally summer shows only get 13-episode orders. Looking at it that way, it was an act of fairness to give the show a fourth season at the same time. As for when the fourth season will air, the network only said "later in the 2015-2016 season," but it seems likely it will be the summer again. (The third season ends in Au- gust, so it's pretty unlikely the show will move back to the fall.) "Beauty and the Beast" is another modern retelling of the classic fable. Kristin Kreuk plays a detective who is saved from being murdered by a mysterious, animalistic man, played by Jay Ryan. She seeks the man out and, of course, falls in love with him. As for what fans can expect from season 3, the network has offered some hints (spoiler alert for those who haven't finished season 2, despite it having aired almost a year ago): "As season three begins, Cat and Vincent are able to focus on their love, finally free from Muirfield, manhunts and beasts. However, that love will be tested as new and more dangerous threats await." Have a question? Email us at questions@tvtabloid.com. Please include your name and town.
