That, in a nutshell, is what drives Danny Darst, Shelby Public Works Director, to undertake the new Shelby Recycling Program. The program will begin in early January, 2012. Blue rollout containers will be exclu- sively for recycling. The top lid of the rollout will have the information on what is recyclable and can be placed inside. Recycling containers will be picked up every other week and will cost customers $3.00 a month. Presently, garbage pickup costs Shelby $33 a ton. Last year, 7,644 tons was picked up and went to the landfill, costing about a quarter million dollars. The present program is also very time con- suming. The national average for recycling is 30 to 35%. Danny has set a goal for Shelby of 60% and he constantly preaches that "It's the right thing to do!" For Shelby's Director of Public Works, it is a five step program; 1. Positive, 2. Simple, 3. Affordable, 4. Time Saving, 5. Environmentally good! Everyone in Shelby is asked to sign-up for the blue cart delivery. There are forms available or you can sign-up online at www.cityofshelby.com/recycle-sign-up.php. The amazing part of recycling is that approximately 85% of household waste is recyclable. Become a part of this positive step forward in Shelby. It's easy! –M. A.
