Back in January, TLC real- ized it had a hit on its hand with its "Cake Boss" spinoff, "Cake Boss: Next Great Bak- er." Just days before 2.34 million viewers tuned in for the finale, the cable network announced that it had quick- ly renewed the competition series for a second season. Well, the flour and icing sugar will be flying furiously when the second season gets underway Monday, Nov 28 with a special 90-minute premiere. Over the course of the 10-episode series span, a baker's dozen of cake artists will do batter – er, battle to avoid elimination in hopes of winning the big grand prize and an opportunity to ap- prentice alongside the Car- lo's Bakery staff. What's new this time around? The challenges, for one. With a successful first run under their belts, Buddy 'Cake Boss' Valastro and his famiglia will be looking to up the ante with some tougher challenges than the last season. In exchange, the prize money has been doubled too. Last year's $50,000 cash prize, which was awarded to Season 1 winner Dana Her- bert, has become a $100,000 cash prize this year. The win- ner will also get a lucrative four-page feature in "Brides Magazine," and will get to work alongside Buddy's crew to hone their already impressive skills. The venue is different too. Episodes of "Cake Boss" have featured the big move as some of the Carlo's Bak- ery crew moved into their new, larger factory facilities at Lackawanna Center in Jer- sey City (the Hoboken loca- tion remains as their central retail location). And that larger space will come in handy for the next round of "Next Great Baker," which had previously been filmed at a local community college. The general format re- mains the same. Each epi- sode will feature two chal- lenges: the first one will put their various skills to the test while the other is an elimina- Buddy Valastro (center) with "Next Great Baker" contestants. tion challenge. That's when the cake artists will have to put their reputations on the line by creating an impres- sive cake for an event or a theme of Buddy's choosing. The judges will then deliber- ate and select the contestant with the weakest perfor- mance, who will be eliminat- ed from the competition and shuttled home in the back of a delivery truck (presumably in embarrassment). But before the competi- tion even gets started, TLC will set the mood with a one- hour special titled "Family Secrets." It provides a light inside look at the lives of the crew that have come to be known by their first names since "Cake Boss" first pre- miered back in 2009.
