Sure, it's exciting to watch talented people vie for a cash prize and a title such as "Top Chef" or even "Chopped Champion." But what does it mean to the everyday life of someone who's struggling to shake off the title of "Out-of- Work Chef"? As many nervously watch unemployment and job growth rates, the Food Net- work is trying to do its share to keep good chefs working by pairing them up with good jobs in its latest competitive series, "Chef Hunter." Airing Thursday nights on Food, three promising chefs go head-to-head in a career- making competition that will see the winner get awarded something that is highly val- ued by anyone facing unem- ployment right now: a job. And a top job, at that. In each of the episodes, the applicants are put to the test in two separate rounds. To test their culinary skills, each will have to create an original appetizer along with a signa- ture dish that could be fea- tured on the restaurant's menu. The weakest performer will be sent home and the re- maining two will move onto the second challenge, which is designed to test their busi- ness skills and their ability to withstand the pressure. Think of it as an on-the-job test run. They'll each have the opportunity to run the kitchen for one evening. There, they'll implement their own menu and manage the staff, all while ensuring a full house gets a happy restaurant expe- rience. And like most hiring processes, the candidate with the best performance will get the full-time gig as an Execu- tive Chef. Some skeptics might be thinking "Wait, haven't I heard this before? Wasn't that the prize on 'Hell's Kitch- en'?" True but in this case, the goal is to provide more of a long-term employment op- portunity rather than a short- term career boost. Just as casting calls went out for competitors, so too did Contestants on "Chef Hunter" the call go out for prospective employers (particularly in the Southern California area) who are in the market for a new Executive Chef. Food has been tight-lipped so far about upcoming episodes, presum- ably so that patrons of the dif- ferent establishments won't reveal any spoilers online if they notice a new face in the kitchen. So who gets to decide on the winner? That task falls to each restaurant's owner, its manager, and to series regu- lar Carrie McCully. McCully might be a fresh face to TV viewers but she comes with 15 years of experience as head of a firm that specializes in recruiting and placing culi- nary professionals.
