But it's not just the kids -- many grown- ups are also getting ready for the fun. Whether it's gearing up for a costume party, decorating the house or just looking to make themed snacks, some revelers are probably chan- nel- or online surfing right this minute for some ideas and inspiration. Enter the Hallmark Channel. On Monday, Oct. 24, do- mestic maven Martha Stew- art has it all covered in her one-hour special, "Martha Stewart's Haunted House." He'll also bake up some pumpkin-shaped ched- dar crackers before preparing his Devil's Flaming Shrimp and Crabmeat Coffins. Aside from the fun – and occasionally gory -- decora- tive touches to fit the theme, at-home chefs looking for a traditional Halloween recipe may be surprised by the wide variety of options available. However, many of the recipes do tend to feature ingredients that are harvested at this time of year including apples, pumpkins and nuts. It's not just a question of convenience, either: this can also be traced back to Hal- loween's origins as a Celtic harvest festival called Sam- hain. Even pumpkin carving seems to have its roots in the British Isles: many claim the Irish and Scottish immigrants arriving in the New World brought with them their tradi- tion of turnip carving – it just happens that pumpkins turned out to be more plenti- ful.
