The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y., Friday, December 5, 2014 18 By Jacqui Wiens TV Media I t's been a bit more obvious than most "will they, won't they" plots, but anxious fans of "Castle" can breathe easily knowing that Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion, "Fire- fly") and Kate Beckett (Stana Katic, "Heroes") have finally tied the knot. The pair have won numer- ous awards for their portrayal of the police detective and crime writer-turned-consul- tant and have been nominat- ed for "Favorite TV Duo" at the 2015 People's Choice Awards. Catch a new episode, before "Castle" takes a break, when the mid-season finale airs Monday, Dec. 8, on ABC. It took five seasons for Cas- tle and Beckett to get en- gaged, but their wedding was set to finally happen in the season 6 finale. Unfortunately, some mysterious circumstanc- es led to Castle disappearing on the very morning of their ceremony. While that storyline hasn't reached a full conclu- sion in the seventh season, we do know that Castle appears to have been involved in his kidnapping, although he has no memory of any of it. Five weeks later, in the sixth episode of this season, every- one finally got the wedding they were hoping for. Of course, it wouldn't be "Cas- tle" without some kookiness. After wondering what their lives would be like if he and Beckett had never met, Castle gets a chance to find out. While investigating a case, he passes out and is pulled into an alternate universe. In the other world, Castle is struggling as an author be- cause he didn't have Beckett to inspire his Nikki Heat series. Beckett, meanwhile, has be- come captain of her precinct but is single and never solved her mother's murder without Castle's help. Skipping over the details, Castle eventually finds his way back to his reali- ty and, now convinced he has improved Beckett's life, imme- diately asks Beckett to marry him ... right now! It would have been easy for Castle to be turned off at the thought of a wedding after his harrowing ordeals through the first part of this season, but in an interview with "En- tertainment Weekly," he con- firmed that Castle would al- ways be a fan of weddings. "He's been married twice al- ready. It's not like he's gun shy. I think Castle is a man who loves life and he loves people and I think that is something that will never fundamentally change about him." The show-runners' decision to delay the wedding gave them an opportunity to dem- onstrate just how much the relationship has grown over the years and how the charac- ters have developed as a re- sult. When we first met Castle, he was an immature woman- izer, and while he may still be immature, he is definitely committed to Beckett as much as she is to him. Back in August 2013, after the proposal but before Beck- ett officially accepted, Fillion sat down with OTRC.com to talk about how appropriate the storylines had been. "So many times it was like they won't, one will, but the other won't, the timing was bad, the positions were bad," Fillion said. "We all believed in our hearts [that] they belonged together. Things would always get in the way and that's, I think, real life. I think that's re- ality." Much of the series thus far has been focused on explor- ing Beckett's history, but view- ers should be pleased to know that "Castle" has plans to delve into the titular charac- ter's past. Surprisingly, we don't know too much about Richard Castle, aside from that fact that he's been mar- ried twice and is raising his teenage daughter, Alexis (Molly Quinn, "We're the Mill- ers," 2013). Despite the dark undertones of Beckett's back story, don't expect the rest of this season to get too dreary. In the "Entertainment Weekly" interview, Fillion ex- plained: "It took years and years to wear [Beckett] down. She gets so dark and brooding and she's often angry and just short-tempered, and Castle just wears his joy on his sleeve. He's that kind of a man. He likes life. He loves people. So it would fit to rea- son that Beckett had all of this history and this crazy stuff go- ing on that made her so tough, and here we have Cas- tle, not so tough. He's an OK guy." It took a long time and more than a few false starts, but Richard Castle and Kate Beckett are now officially hus- band and wife. Follow the next stages of their adventure when the mid-season finale of "Castle" airs Monday, Dec. 8, on ABC, and don't forget to tune in when the second half of the season returns in the spring.
