The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y., Friday, September 16, 2011 2 coverstory Star-power surplus Fox boasts big-name stars in fall lineup By Rosalyn Stevens TV Media R omantic comedy, sci- ence fiction, animation -- there's something for everyone in the Fox fall line- up. And the on-screen talent is so great, you won't want to leave the couch. In addition to a slew of new program- ming, Fox will bring back a pile of favorites, including "Glee," "Raising Hope" and "Cops," which began Season 24 a couple of weeks back. New programming kicks off Tuesday, Sept. 20, with "New Girl." Zooey Deschanel stars as Jess, a quirky teacher who finds her long-time boyfriend with another woman and is forced to find a new place to live. After an Internet search, she finds three single guys looking for a roommate and their lives are thrown into a tailspin of comedic genius when she moves in. Emotion- al, frustrated and just a little odd, Jess takes some getting used to by her new room- mates, Max Greenfield, Lam- orne Morris and Jake M. John- son. "It's just sort of an interest- ing intersection of all these different people's personali- ties, and the comedy really comes out of the characters," Deschanel told "Access Holly- wood." "I'm really excited. I love shooting it, and every that "X Factor" -- the star quality that brought us the likes of Leona Lewis. Cowell is back with former "American Idol" judge Paula Abdul, along with Pussycat Dolls lead singer Nicole Sherzinger and record executive L.A. Ried, determined to find the next hot act in the U.S. "This is the show that re- "Allen Gregory" follows the socialization of a pretentious 7-year-old boy week we have new amazing scripts that are so funny." Critics have called the role tailor-made for the "(500) Days of Summer" actress, and she doesn't entirely disagree. Deschanel said she identifies with her character, making it an easy and fun role to play. "When I read this, I thought, 'I know exactly what to do with this,'" she said. "I feel really good about this character." And we do, too, Zooey. "New Girl" is one you won't want to miss. The next talent show-reali- ty series, "The X Factor," is coming to this side of the pond in a two-night series premiere on Tuesday, Sept. 21 and Wednesday, Sept. 22. Si- mon Cowell is back, with three additional judges at his side, to find someone with placed 'Idol' in the U.K. eight years ago," Cowell said. You never know who's going to land Centre stage on shows like this, so don't miss a min- ute as a new star is born. Sunday nights won't be the same, with the Animation Domination block chock full of guest stars and a new se- ries that'll tickle the funny bone to no end. Kiefer Suther- land, Jeremy Irons, Joan Riv- ers, Andy Garcia and Kathy Griffin are just a few of those scheduled to make an ap- pearance this fall. "The Simp- sons" will feature chefs An- thony Bourdain and Gordon Ramsay in "The Food Wife," Lisa falls in love with Michael Cera on Valentine's Day, and "The Social Network's" Arnie Hammer will lend his voice to "The D'Ohcial Network." Filling the space between "The Simpsons" and "Family Guy" is a new show, created by Jonah Hill. "Allen Gregory" features "the world's most pretentious seven-year-old" who's forced to join his peers at public school for the first time in his life. The show has been in the works for a couple of years, Hill said at this year's A/Auto Boutique B/The Green Giraffe 2 x 2 Comic-Con, and he can't wait for the premiere episode on Oct. 30. "We really just wanted to write this story about a pre- tentious jerk, but we thought it would be adorable if he was, like, adorable and sev- en," he said. The biggest chal- lenge for Allen Gregory (he must always be addressed by both names) is relating to kids his own age. "He's watching 'Charlie Rose,' and then these kids are talking about wiping boogers in their dad's hair," Hill laughed. Next up is a sci-fi thriller from the likes of Steven Spiel- berg, Peter Chernin, Rene Echavarria and Brannon Bra- ga. With resumes that include 1982's "E.T.", "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," Fox's "24" and more, this combo isn't likely to disappoint TV fans this fall. "Terra Nova," which was originally scheduled for release in the winter of 2010, hits the air with a special two- hour debut on Monday, Sept. 26. Based in a world far in the future, Earth is over-populat- ed and over-developed. The planet's resources are dwin- dling, and life as we know it cannot continue. At least, not here. Scientists think they've found the an- swer when they discover a way to return to the past -- 85 million years in the past to be exact. And that's exactly where the Shannon family finds themselves in this adrenaline-pumping series. Chirstopher's Coins 2 x 2 hollywoodQ&A By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: I'm looking to buy a copy of the George Burns clas- sic "Just You and Me, Kid." Is it on DVD? A: Though few would argue that it is a "classic" of the clas- sic comedian's catalog, strangely "Just You and Me, Kid" isn't available on DVD. Not officially, of course -- there are bootlegs available in the usual places. This suggests there's at least some demand, though the suits at Columbia Pictures apparently don't think there's enough for a full DVD issue. That seems incredible, considering the names involved. It features the surprising pairing of aging comic Burns and young starlet Brooke Shields, one of the most famous child actors of all time, near the height of that fame. Legendary mu- sical man Burl Ives and "Brady Bunch" star Christopher Knight also star. The film's story itself should also be a boost to demand, es- pecially for fans of Burns. He plays an ex-vaudeville star strug- gling to carry on after the death of his wife and performing partner. This, of course, makes it semi-autobiographical for him, as his wife and stage partner, Gracie Allen, died in 1969, 10 years before this film's release. It also marks the second time Burns played a vaudeville man in a film, echoing his triumphant return to the big screen in 1975's "The Sunshine Boys" (which, it should go without saying, is available on DVD).
