The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y., Friday, September 2, 2011 10 A/ Olsego Manor B/Warm Solutions 2 x 2.5 "Chopped Champions" competitor Wade Burch Food tops up on 'Chopped' with marathon, tournament Kitchen labor TV Media L abor Day is a day of rest for many American work- ers – but there's no rest when you're in the "Chopped" kitchen. Food Network is celebrat- ing the end of summer by air- ing back-to-back episodes of the challenging cooking competition throughout the day on Monday, Sept. 5. Each episode features three rounds of elimination-style challenges -- an appetizer, entree and dessert round -- in which the four initial com- petitors are whittled down to two before a winner is de- clared and awarded a $10,000 prize. But to do so, they have to create an im- pressive restaurant-quality dish using ingredients that are only revealed to them at the start of each round's al- lotted 30 minutes. The series has been a strong performer and has a very loyal following, so much so that it debuted a third "Champions" edition just last Tuesday. The five-part tourna- ment features sixteen win- ners from past "Chopped" competitions who return to do battle once again. This time, there's added pressure: they've never had to endure the anguish of being told by host Ted Allen that they've "been chopped," so you can bet they'll work hard to avoid the stigma of being the first to go in each match- up. There are some serious bragging rights on the line for these winners, not to mention the increased prize money to- taling $50,000. Naturally, each chef hopes that he or she has got what it takes to make it all the way to the finals, which are sched- uled to air on Sept. 27. The previous "Champions" tournament was won by New York-based chef Madison Cowan, who somehow man- aged to make it all look ef- fortless as he quickly worked waffle cones into his appetiz- er and Cheetos into his en- tree. The emotional conclu- sion made for a memorable feel-good TV moment when the usually impassive judges shed a few tears when Cow- an's young daughter joined the appreciative chef to cele- brate. Last year also featured an "All-Stars Tournament" in which celebrity chefs, Food Network stars and even "Chopped" judges participat- ed in a battle of their own. In the end, charity was the big winner -- celebrity chef Nate Appleman was the final win- ner and a $50,000 donation was made on his behalf to Kawasaki Disease research, an auto-immune disease that afflicts his young son.
