The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y., Friday, August 26, 2011 2 coverstory Friendly skies By Kyla Brewer TV Media I Ricci, Allen lead ABC into new fall season The following night, "Char- t's almost that time of year again. As summer days wind down and nights be- come crisper, TV fans will have reason to curl up on the couch with a blanket and some new favorite series. The fall television season is just around the corner, and with it comes droves of new series looking to snag viewers and dominate ratings. ABC really shakes things up this fall with three new come- dies, three new dramas and an unusual new fantasy series. The first new show to make an appearance on ABC's fall schedule is the drama "Re- venge," scheduled to debut Wednesday, Sept. 21. De- scribed by some as a modern- day version of the classic "The Count of Monte Cristo," the series explores what happens when a diabolical young woman tries to take down a powerful family. Emily VanCamp, best known for her roles in "Ever- wood" and "Brothers & Sis- ters," stars as Emily, who ar- rives in the Hamptons bent on getting revenge for her fa- ther's wrongful incarceration. Madeline Stowe co-stars as Victoria, the powerful matri- arch of the Grayson family. She, too, hides a secret, along with her calculating husband Conrad (Henry Czerny). lie's Angels" is scheduled to return to the airwaves. The drama is a remake of the campy '70s TV show "Char- lie's Angels." Drew Barry- more, who starred in the up- dated movie versions of the series in the early 2000s, has signed on as a producer. This time, the Angels are based in sunny Miami. Ra- chael Taylor, Annie Ilonzeh and Minka Kelly take on the roles that once inspired young girls to sport Farrah hair and karate-chop their way across the playground. Taylor plays former thief and Park Avenue princess Abby Sampson, while Ilonzeh por- trays Kate Prince, a cop who lost everything when she got in too deep. Kelly joins the la- dies as new Angel Eve, a friend of their recently de- ceased partner Gloria. Speaking of fabulous fe- males, producers snagged big screen star Christina Ricci to headline the new drama "Pan Am," which premieres Sun- day, Sept. 25. Set in the 1960s, Maggie (Ricci) is just one of a group of glamorous women who enjoy a privileged life of air travel. Promising romantic entangle- ments, espionage and adven- ture, "Pan Am" is emerging as a front-runner among critics, but it didn't make it to the runway without a few bumps. The show's male lead was re- Christina Ricci stars in "Pan Am" cast this summer, with Mike Vogel taking over for lesser- known actor Jonah Lotan. On Sept. 28, ABC adds "Suburgatory" to its already popular Wednesday night comedy block. During this summer's media tour, the se- ries was a popular choice among critics, not surprising for a show created by "Parks and Recreation" writer Emily Kapnek. Jeremy Sisto stars as George Altman, a single fa- ther who moves his teenage daughter Tessa (Jane Levy) from New York to the suburbs. The problem is that she thinks life among the well-mani- cured lawns and picture-per- fect moms (including "Curb Your Enthusiasm's" Cheryl Hines) is much scarier than life in the big city. TV fans might get deja vu watching Tim Allen's "Last Man Standing," slated to pre- miere Tuesday, Oct. 11. As ex- ecutive producer and star of the new comedy, Allen ap- pears to resuscitate his old Tool Man persona. He plays a full-time father to three girls A/Auto Boutique B/The Green Giraffe 2 x 2 when his wife (Nancy Travis of "Becker") goes back to work. His previous hit, "Home Im- provement," was about an uber-masculine, tool-toting husband and father to three boys. Much like in "Home Im- provement," Allen's new char- acter is focused on asserting manliness in a woman's world. Modern-day masculinity is also explored in the new com- edy "Man Up!" from writer Christopher Moynihan. Three buddies try to figure out what it means to be a 'real man' in the show, which is scheduled to debut Tuesday, Oct. 18, join- ing "Last Man Standing" for a manly night of television. Mather Zickel, Christopher Moynihan and Dan Fogle star as Will, Craig and Kenny, three pals determined to man up like their fathers and grandfa- thers before them. Those looking for some- thing a little different can tune in to ABC's new fantasy series "Once Upon a Time," premiering Sunday, Oct. 23. Actress Jennifer Morrison, known as Dr. Allison Cameron to "House" fans, invites view- ers on a fairy tale-themed ad- venture. Emma's life is turned up- side down when the son she gave up years ago returns. She learns he believes she's the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming. When she tries to bring the young lad home, she's drawn to the unusual New England town where magic lurks beneath the surface. Chirstopher's Coins 2 x 2 hollywoodQ&A By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: I heard a rumor that the guy from "Law & Order: Los Angeles" was in a movie playing Ernest Heming- way. Is that true? If so, what movie was it? A: Corey Stroll made a splash on screens this past spring as the legendary American novellist Ernest Hemingway in Woody Allen's latest film, "Midnight in Paris." Filming actually wrapped last summer, before Corey Stoll debuted as Det. Jaruszalski in NBC's "Law & Order: Los An- geles." However, by the time "Midnight in Paris" premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this past May, "L&O: LA" had al- ready been canceled. Stoll was able to take comfort in the fact that, though out of a job, he had a major role in one of the surprise hits of the summer, and had the chance to play a role most stars dream of. In fact the film was full of dream-making roles as Allen painstakingly tried to recreate the glamor of Paris in the roaring '20s. Sharing the screen with Stoll's Hemingway were such stars as Adrien Brody playing legendary artist Sal- vador Dali, Tom Hiddleston as Hemingway cohort F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Alison Pill as Fitzgerald's wife Zelda. TV great Kathy Bates appeared in the envy-worthy role of Gertrude Stein, a landmark feminist writer and Hemingway mentor. As well, Argentine film star Marcial di Fonzo Bo got to portray Pablo Picasso, and French star Yves Heck played legendary Broadway songwriter Cole Porter.
