They’ll stop in various locales along the way including Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Denver and Manhattan, Kan., where they will face various challenges – most of them planned, but there could be some unfore- seen ones too such as one truck’s fryer issues during last season’s race. It all comes down to which team out-performs the others in the main event, which can be challenging for some de- pending on the changing re- gional tastes in each locale. The top-selling teams ad- vance to the next city while the lowest-earning one fires up the engine for that lonely trip back home. To the victor go the spoils, though, and the $100,000 grand prize (double last year’s total) awaits the first team to cross that finish line at Miami Beach, Fla. But anything can happen during this race, and last sea- son’s finale is testament to that. L.A.-based Nom Nom Truck, with its Vietnamese sandwiches and tacos, was consistently the top-earning truck each week; yet it was New York’s Grill ‘Em All, with its gourmet hamburgers, that managed to pull ahead dur- ing the final stop and win it all. Host Tyler Florence and “The Great Food Truck Race” are set to pull into their Sun- day timeslot for a second ex- citing season, which follows specialty food trucks as they sprint across America. At each stop along the way, they have to out-smart and out-sell each other in an effort to stave off weekly eliminations and get to that finish line first. The eight teams that have signed up this year will first The renewed interest in food trucks is largely due to the variety of menu items now available to diners-on- the-go. The big trend, as seen in the Cooking Channel series “Eat St.,” is all about special- ty food items and fusion cui- sine, from Korean BBQ tacos and lobster-stuffed grilled cheese sandwiches to fanciful cupcakes. And while Los Angeles and New York were quick to lead this trend a few years back, business has been particularly good in Portland and Austin, which have the highest food truck-to-person ratios in the country. City regulations may deter or encourage this trend in other cities but for the op- erators and their loyal con- sumers, it’s really all about good food.
