During one stop in Dallas, Goldman samples a coconut pie, some roadhouse s’mores and a peppermint red velvet whoopee pie. Granted, some of the stops include some classics too including the Berghoff Restaurant’s leg- endary apple strudel and an old-fashioned rice pudding from Philadelphia’s Brown Betty Dessert Boutique. But now they – along with anyone with a sweet tooth -- can get their sugar fix when Duff Goldman returns to the airwaves with a new Food Network series, “Sugar High.” The new six-episode series kicks off Monday, Aug. 8 and follows the renowned cake artist on a motorcycle journey to check out America’s best desserts. The desserts aren’t your typical fare either, and sur- prisingly (given Goldman’s area of expertise), there isn’t much cake to be had. In keep- ing with the beloved host’s love for all things quirky and try chef, Goldman guides viewers along by introducing the people behind these cre- ations and gets a unique be- hind-the-scenes look at the work that goes into these sweet confections. From prep- aration to presentation, Gold- man takes it all in with his usual unbridled enthusiasm and humor. This latest television proj- ect has been just one of many in what has been a busy year for Goldman. His previous work on “Ace of Cakes” earned him a nomination for a James Beard Foundation Award earlier this year and he continues to put in numerous appearances at events around the country. The other big move this year has been opening a second cake shop on the west coast. The origi- nal Charm City Cakes in Balti- more – as featured during the 10-season run of “Ace” -- will continue its operations but the new Charm City Cakes West in Santa Monica allows the team to cover more ground west of the Mississip- pi. And while Goldman splits his time between operations on both coasts, he’s also busy with his line of bakeware and cake decorating products called Duff Goldman by Gart- ner Studios. In fact, several new items have recently been added including a red velvet cake mix, cupcake tattoos and even an airbrush machine. It’s all part of Goldman’s goal of fostering creativity and inno- vation, whether it’s with his team of cake artists or the at- home bakers across America.
