Pike County Farm Bureau, Inc. annual meeting Pike County Farm Bu- reau Inc's annual meeting was on September 3. Sixty- seven members and guests were in attendance. James Uppencamp, 50 -year mem- ber, was honored with a cer- tificate. Eight other 50 -year members were reported: Bobby Cox, Dale McCrary, Mike Shawhan, Thomas Whitehead, Ishmael Whit- ney, Edward Willis, Larry Willis and Carl Wyatt. The following Pike County po- litical hopefuls were given the opportunity to speak with the body: Joe Sutton running for Commissioner of District 2, Darin McDon- ald running for Prosecutor, and Faye Leslie running for Auditor. Mark Messmer who is running for Indiana State Senator was also pres- ent and spoke with the mem- bership. District 9's Young Farm- er's leaders Jonathon and Derika Spaetti discussed the activities of Young Farmer's in the district and shared details of their up- coming discussion meets and the conference on Jan- uary 30 -31, 2015. Joe Furman and Amanda Potts shared the many activ- ities conducted by the board this year. A slide presentation was shared with the audience. Logan Dillon, 4-Her, thanked the Farm Bureau Membership for purchas- ing his prize chicken at the 4-H Livestock auction. Pike County Farm Inc. pur- chased 11 animals for a to- tal purchase price of $2125. Jennifer Gish shared Farm Bureau's priority is- sues for 2015: The taxing formula for real property. Farmland taxes have in- creased 33 percent from 2007 to 2014. This is with- out the state's proposal to tax farmland at the "Soil Productivity Level." The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Ar- my Corps of Engineers pro- posed rule that will expand federal jurisdiction over wet features and dry land by de- claring them to be "waters of the United States," ( WO- TUS). The change will im- pact farmers, builders, businesses, local govern- ment and home owners. Farm Bureau believes that the new proposal is written so broadly that it will make most ditches, hydric soils and areas that are wet only during and immediately af- ter rain events subject to fed- eral regulation.* Scott Clinkenbeard, with Texas Gas presented the program about Safety Con- cerns in working fields that have buried gas lines. He en- couraged everyone to call 811 before digging. *Waters of the United States Regulatory Over- reach Protection Act of 2014 (HR 5078) was introduced by US Rep. Steve Souther- land (R-Fla). The bill was in response to the EPA and Army Corps' proposed Wa- ters of the U.S. rule (men- tioned above) that would sig- nificantly expand federal ju- risdiction and regulation of both wet and dry land fea- tures. The bill prohibits the Environmental Protec- tion Agency and the Army Corps of Engineers from de- veloping, finalizing, adopt- ing, implementing, applying, administering or enforcing the proposed WOTUS rule. The bill would also require the EPA and the Corps to en- gage in a federalism consul- tation with the states and local governments. H.R. 5078 will be considered on the House floor as early as Sept. 9. Contact your repre- sentatives and urge passage of this bill. area haPPenings Al-Anon meeting—Meetings are each Wednes- day at 11:30 a.m., located at 424 W. 7th St. in Jasper.
