The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y., Friday, July 1, 2011 10 A/ Olsego Manor B/Warm Solutions 2 x 2.5 A Food Fourth Deen marathon dishes out summer fun Food Network star Paula Deen TV Media July. F or many Americans, holi- days just don’t get any bigger than the Fourth of With its picnics, barbecues and fireworks, Independence Day is a time for memorable get-togethers to celebrate the nation’s history and enjoy summer in its prime. And while many viewers may be out enjoying some of the local festivities, others may be looking to Food for some last- minute meal ideas. And who better to offer up recipes for the occasion than the reign- ing queen of Southern cuisine, Paula Deen. On July 4, Food will air a six-hour daytime marathon of “Paula’s Home Cooking” and “Paula’s Best Dishes.” Throughout the run, Deen and her family offer up seasonal recipes perfect for summer fun -- whether it be a pot-luck gathering, a picnic, a tailgate, a barbecue or just to sample the Southern dishes Deen is famous for. Recipes featured include chilled asparagus and corn salad, peach barbecue tilapia, key lime ice cream pie, corn fritters, grilled pineapple pound cake and much more. The choice of spotlighting Deen on Independence Day seems fitting given her success is a result of her own struggle for independence. It wasn’t an easy start for Deen: before be- ing known to millions for her charm and relaxed hospitality, the Georgia native struggled for years with agoraphobia as a result of losing both her par- ents at a young age. As her marriage crumbled and her anxieties kept her house- bound, the mother of two sought refuge in the kitchen. Unbeknownst to her, it would prove to be the start of her journey towards success. After a move to Savannah, the newly divorced Deen used her last $200 and a lot of hard work to start up a successful catering business called The Bag Lady. With continued help from her sons Bobby and Jamie, she parlayed their ini- tial success into a restaurant called The Lady, and in 1996 they opened up the now- iconic The Lady & Sons restau- rant in historic Savannah. Things moved quickly after that: she released her first cookbook thanks to one satis- fied lunch customer (who happened to be a publishing representative) and her res- taurant was prominently sin- gled out in 1999 by USA To- day. Several TV appearances followed before she landed her first Food show in 2002, “Paula’s Home Cooking.” Despite a lot of criticism about the fat content in many of her recipes, the self-made Emmy winner has built her- self quite an empire with books and her own magazine, four other restaurants, a film role (2005’s “Elizabeth- town”) and the title of Grand Marshal at this year’s Tourna- ment of Roses Parade. While she’s kept Food’s lineup filled with other outings, her sons also starred in “Road Taste” -- which led to Pat and Gina Neely’s start on Food with their own show, “Down Home With the Neelys.” More of Deen’s unique reci- pe meal ideas and timely holi- day tips can be found online at both Food’s website (food- network.com) and her own (pauladeen.com).
