The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y., Friday, June 3, 2011 10 A/ Olsego Manor B/Warm Solutions 2 x 2.5 New season, new ‘Star’ Talent search debuts seventh season “Food Network Star” judges Bob Tuschman, Susie Fogelson, Bobby Flay and Giada De Laurentiis TV Media A new season brings new faces, a new title and the promise of new be- ginnings for one lucky new- comer. Formerly known as “The Next Food Network Star,” the more simply titled “Food Net- work Star” is set to debut its seventh season on Sunday, June 5 when judges Bobby Flay, Giada De Laurentiis and Food execs Susie Fogelson and Bob Tuschman renew their quest for the next on-air talent. For those unfamiliar with the concept, think of it as an extended job interview, com- plete with intense challenges that are designed to test your abilities and simulate your fu- ture work environment. Now granted, most job interviews aren’t played out before mil- lions of viewers each week; nor do they feature cameos and critiques by famous fu- ture “co-workers” like Paula Deen. But at the end of the process, one lucky contestant will get the ultimate job: the starring role in their very own Food series. For the 15 fresh faces that have made it past the initial selection process, the focus will be on impressing the judges with both their skills and their on-air presence. The contestants are: New York cu- linary teacher Alicia Sanchez; Chris Nirschel from Hoboken, N.J.; radio host Howie Drum- mond; former comedian Jeff Mauro; research chef Juba Kali; executive chef Justin Balmes; blogger Justin Davis; culinary teacher Jyll Everman; Katy Clark from Long Beach, Calif.; food writer Mary Beth Albright; Orchid Paulmeier from Bluffton, S.C.; L.A.-based Penny Davidi; caterer Susie Jimenez; chef Vic “Vegas” Moea; and New York chef Whitney Chen. As the Food Network con- tinues to focus on personality- driven shows, this show’s con- cept has seemingly worked well for them. It gives execu- tives a chance to test these candidates out before they are even hired. Previous winners have kept the Food lineup staffed with such notables as “Big Daddy’s House” host Aaron McCargo Jr., “Ten Dol- lar Dinners” host Melissa D’Arabian and last season’s winner, “Aarti Party” host Aarti Sequeira. It’s also netted Food one of its biggest stars, Guy Fi- eri, the winner of Season 2 back in 2006. Being a runner- up isn’t too bad either, judging from the experiences of “Kid in a Candy Store’s” Adam Gertler and “Outrageous Foods” host Tom Pizzica. The two-hour season pre- miere will kick off the show’s most star-studded season yet. Some of the famous faces set to drop by the L.A. studio in- clude Mario Lopez, Courteney Cox and the rest of the cast of ABC’s “Cougar Town,” Wolf- gang Puck and many more. After all is said and done, the winner will be announced during the season finale on August 14.
