Tree ID Hike Join a Park Ranger for a 1.0 mile hike along the Hemlock Nature Trail. Tree identification will be the focus of this hike. Meet at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 2:00 pm. Wreaths were placed by all members of the council, The American Legion; Amvets; Disabled American Veterans; Veterans of Foreign Wars; and Shelby Detachment of the Marine Corps League. Guest Speaker was Lieutenant Colonel Charles Ayers of the U. S. Air Force, Retired. Music and song was provided by Shelby’s First Baptist Church Ensemble. A twen- ty-one gun salute was given by the N. C. Foothills Detachment of the Marine Corps League. It was a very moving observance and a reminder that we should always remember and care for our veterans. –M. A. Unexpectedly, but to the delight of the audience, Ben Ledford (shown below) had to re- c e i v e the “best of the day” award. After receiving his diploma, Ben stopped, stood at the front of the stage facing the audience with his rose and exclaimed “Mama”! His excitement brought down the house. The graduation ceremony was the epitome of North Shel- by’s slogan: “Never Give Up on Student Success.” The Honors Chorus together with the Signing Choir participated in the “North Shelby School Song” which was featured at the beginning of the program. The festivities also included a visual refl ection of the graduating students and their time at North Shelby.
