The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y., Friday, May 6, 2011 10 A/ Olsego Manor B/Warm Solutions 2 x 2.5 Barbecue’s best New Food series smokes out a champ to outdo the other with their barbecue mastery (including signature sauces, rubs and marinades) in hopes of avoid- ing elimination at the end of each of the four episodes. Personal and professional pride is on the line -- though a $50,000 grand prize pro- vides some motivation, too. The series was filmed last fall in New Jersey’s Liberty State Park, across the river from Manhattan. Not only does this city setting allow for a different set of conditions than cooking in a big open area, but it also becomes part of the challenges. In fact, the final three competitors will have to race around New York City in a single-day bar- becue marathon that in- cludes making and delivering snacks to the Yankees’ sea- son ticket holders, serving the cast of a Broadway show and finally some late-night cater- ing in Brooklyn. It won’t all be ribs or steaks either -- the contes- tants will have to tackle a va- riety of dishes, including des- serts and an amuse-bouche. But these contestants are no amateurs -- a few are restau- rateurs and the rest are pro- fessionals on the barbecue circuit, which competes year- round. Bryan Caswell hosts “Best in Smoke” TV Media ire up the grill (or the smoker) because the bar- becue season is on. Gone are the dreary days of winter spent indoors: spring is in full bloom and the familiar scents of charcoal and barbe- cue sauce are in the air. May F is National Barbecue Month, and the small screen is set to kick off the season as well. On Sunday, Food fires up its newest original series titled “Best in Smoke.” This barbe- cue-themed competition pits six top-notch barbecuers against each other in a series of challenges. Each one tries Comparisons to TLC’s “BBQ Pitmasters” are not surprising: both shows do have a similar format, though the elimination process (and the aforementioned setting) differs in this series. Houston chef Bryan Caswell (a contes- tant on Season 3 of “The Next Iron Chef”) will be at the helm of it all as host, to guide viewers through all the action along the way. Ultimately, it all comes down to the judges: Fort Worth chef Tim Love, author Amy Mills Tunnicliffe (whose father, Mike Mills, is a world- class pitmaster known as “The Legend”), and Mitchell Davis, the vice-president of the James Beard Foundation. Those are some pretty dis- cerning taste buds, which will no doubt get quite a workout sampling the different dishes before the final winner gets crowned.
