The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y., Friday, April 22, 2011 10 A/ Olsego Manor B/Warm Solutions 2 x 2.5 collaborator Mary -- as they hit the road to create her trademark, one-of-a-kind cakes for special events across America. Viewers can get a sneak peek at the series on Sunday, before the pre- miere moves into its Tuesday night time-slot. New cake in town: Former ‘Challenge’ competitor hits the road with new series Mary Moy-Hochstetler, Ashley Vicos, Dennis Marchioni and Erin James in “Have Cake, Will Travel” TV Media lenge” series, you’ve probably seen Ashley Vicos’ creative cake designs. I During these competitions, the Georgia-based decorator managed to set herself apart from the competition thanks to an energetic presence, a f you’ve ever watched TLC’s “Ultimate Cake-Off” or Food Network’s “Chal- bold sense of humor and, well, a tell-it-like-it-is approach. So when viewers happen upon an entertaining personality with some creative culinary skills to back it up, it isn’t surprising that Food Network executives would come calling with a reg- ular gig. Thus “Have Cake, Will Trav- el” was born. The half-hour series follows Vicos and her assistants -- Dennis, Erin and In the premiere episode, Vi- cos has a tall order to fill when she’s asked to create a custom cake for the Harlem Globetrot- ters. The iconic basketball team is set to play in Hartford, where they ask Vicos to pre- pare a cake that can be incor- porated into their game. The cake team will have to work together to make sure its cre- ation doesn’t turn out to be the Washington Generals of cakes. Throughout the series’ sev- en-episode run, Vicos and her team make stops in several cities to create cakes for spe- cific events. Other stops in- clude a Mardi Gras extrava- ganza in New Orleans (Vicos’ birthplace), an exclusive after- party at New York’s Fashion Week, a fundraiser organized by the Boston Bruins, the Houston Rodeo, and one of the biggest festivals in the U.S. -- the South by Southwest fes- tival in Austin. It’s been a slow but steady climb to success for Vicos, who has been professionally deco- rating for 11 years. She has built up a clientele while working out of her private At- lanta studio (called Sweet Ashley’s), where she specializ- es in creating her famously customized 3D cakes. And she’s clearly passionate about what she does -- between or- ders, she also offers decorat- ing classes, travels the country to participate in high-profile events and has been featured in several magazines. As for the jump to televi- sion, Vicos has attributed her success to her persistence. Once photos of her designs came to the attention of a Food Network executive, it quickly led to her first invita- tion to compete on Food’s “Challenge” series. Several television appearances and a series launch later, it’s clear that her persistence has paid off.
