KOSA The retirees fished Lake Wylie last week with David O’Shields and Doug Sparrow getting the win with 11.0. Mack Wyatt and Johnny Christianberry took second with 10.55, and they anchored their catch with a 2.85 largemouth, which took big fish of the day. Tony and Mike Black had 9.70 and settled in third. This week the retirees head to Lake Norman. MOSS Thirty boats fished last Thursday night’s weekly bass tournament on Moss Lake. Alan and Mark Pickleshimer picked up the win with 9.80. Johnny Guffy and Dustin Morehead had 9.01 and were second. Josh Yarbro and Matthew McKillop were a close third with 8.94 and in fourth with 7.01 was Jody Black and Travis Hamrick. Rounding out the top five was Allen McSwain and Larry Denton with 7.74. Big bass of the evening was a 3.61 largemouth brought in by Richard McAbee. Fishing Tips: by Matt Arey Jerkbait Fishing…. All about the retrieve! Never become a monotonous jerkbait fisherman… Always vary your retrieve until you get bit! - after getting your jerkbait down to the desired depth, experiment with different retrieves. Try fast, snapping, jerks followed by doing nothing but watching your line. Try sweeping the bait three or four feet then pausing for variable periods of time. Also, try retrieving the bait with fast jerks without ever letting it come to a complete stop. Whether it’s the time of year or certain weather condi- tions on that particular day, there will always be that something a little bit different that you can do with your retrieve that triggers a bite. Just remember exactly what you were doing with the jerkbait when your initial bite comes, then you can begin establishing your pattern for the day. Next week we will talk about the versatility of a jerkbait from the aspect of weighting them and fishing them as deep as 12-18 feet! Local Get-A-Way Houser Lake POST SP WN SMALLMOUTH T SPAWN Immediately following the spawn is not usually a productive time for catching smallmouth bass. They are exhausted from the rigors of courtship and tend to be a little fickle. But, they can still be caught. A 6-foot ultralight spinning rig spooled with 6-pound line is ideal for catching these skittish fish in clear water. Think big baits too. Spawning is hard, time-consuming work. The fish are hungry. Now is no time for miniscule baits. You might not catch as many fish as you will with smaller baits, but you will catch bigger fish. Target tailout pools, riffles, and chutes, and don’t ignore seams, eddies, and particularly points where feeders enter a main creek. It won’t be easy, but when you have a big fighting smallmouth on the end of your line, it will be worth it. The catfi sh was returned to the pond to be caught another day! - Photo Provided By Gary Miller By I was taken back the other day dur- ing a morning turkey hunt. The rain had persisted all night and into the early morning hours. It wasn’t until about 8:30 that the sun broke through the clouds. It seemed that every living thing had been waiting with anticipation for that hour. The rain had allowed the early risers to sleep in but the sun sounded the alarm for all to get up. The sounds that morn- ing were too numerous to describe. Each creature began its communica- tion without waiting its turn. It sounded like one big cacophony without having any rhyme or reason. I didn’t notice that morning how each sound was different, but how closely each sounded like the other. Some- times the cadences were different but the pitch was nearly identical. And I wondered how each hearer was able to distinguish between its kind and anoth- er kind and even how each could tell the differences of their own kind. And then I thought about God. I wonder how many folks bowed their head to pray this morning. People from Maine to Montana; from New Mexico to North Carolina; and from Connecticut to California. Thursday, April 21-April 27, 2011 Outdoor Connection FISHING REPORT FISHING REPOR Gary Miller Aiming Outdoorsmen Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ oward Christ other countries did the same – all speaking to God, at the same time, but in differ- ent languages. And I wonder how God sorts them all out. It really is amazing that God can not only hear all of us at the same time, but that He does not miss one utterance of despair, one urgent cry for help, or one uplifted plea for direction. He is not only our God, but He is your God. He is not only our God, He is my God. Just as I don’t understand how na- ture works in perfect order and design, I also don’t understand how God can make perfect order out of every single prayer that goes up. But I must believe it by faith. The Bible says that a sparrow doesn’t fall to the ground without Him noticing. When I remember that, I have no prob- lem knowing that even though millions of prayers are knocking on the doors of heaven, God will distinguish each of us as His special and unique child and will be equally excited to hear from us and to give us His very best. www outdoortruths.or www..outdoortruths.org Sportsman‘s Corner Sportsman‘s Corner Bruceu e Camp’s Local Outdoor Truths ES E S F AR TE EE S I FREE TIM T M TES
