The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y., Friday, April 8, 2011 10 A/ Olsego Manor B/Warm Solutions 2 x 2.5 Bobby’s world: Star chef keeps busy by branching out to showcase his range while staying true to his fondness for Southwestern cuisine. His versatility is also on full display in his other Food series, “Throwdown With Bobby Flay.” In each epi- sode, he drops in unexpect- edly on another chef and challenges him or her to a cook-off over their well- known specialty. For exam- ple, in Wednesday’s new ep- isode Flay goes up against restaurant owner Saul Bol- ton in a battle for the title of best baked Alaska. Baking ice cream may seem like a bit of a depar- ture to those used to seeing Flay in front of a BBQ in his other Food series, “Grill It! With Bobby Flay” and “Boy Meets Grill” (airing week- day mornings). There have been other series and spe- cials, to be sure, even one on Cooking Channel called “Brunch @ Bobby’s With Bobby Flay.” But it’s Flay’s latest project, “America’s Next Great Restaurant” (air- ing Sundays on NBC), that brings him closer to what he seems to enjoy the most: the business side of the food in- dustry. Prolific chef Bobby Flay TV Media T hese days, it’s good to be Bobby Flay. From TV shows to cookbooks and restaurants, the celebrity chef continues to find new ways to expand his business reach. And while he’s been enjoying a higher profile lately thanks to his multiple TV series, it’s his love for food and the res- taurant industry itself that keeps Flay on the go. It’s a passion that is regu- larly showcased on “Iron Chef America,” airing Sun- day evenings on Food. Com- pared to the other chefs, Flay has put in the most appear- ances in Kitchen Stadium since the American adapta- tion began. The award-win- ning chef appears to relish the challenges, allowing him As the owner and execu- tive chef of 10 restaurants, Flay likely has some invalu- able advice to the show’s contestants about what works and what doesn’t. He opened New York’s Mesa Grill in 1991 and has since continued to add to his res- taurant empire, with eater- ies in several cities across the country and one in the Bahamas. He’s not a hands- off owner, either -- diners are frequently surprised to see him walk in and roll up his sleeves to make sure the kitchen and food are up to his standards. Accolades and business acumen aside, though, it re- ally does boil down to the food itself, and the French Culinary Institute alumnus seems to consistently deliv- er. Viewers and at-home cooks can find that out for themselves by testing out some of his recipes available on Food’s website (www.foodnetwork.com).
