The eighth season finale is set to air Wednesday, but any fans fearful of suffering “Top Chef” withdrawal can relax: the third season of “Top Chef Masters” is right behind, pre- miering a week later on April 6. Recently, producers have been busy trying to come up with new twists to keep the franchise fresh, including themed spinoffs such as “Top Chef: Just Desserts.” This latest season of “Top Chef,” dubbed “All-Stars,” brought back 18 chefs (some you cheered and some you jeered) from previ- ous seasons to give them a second shot at the title. After all the challenges and the tough eliminations, that group is now down to just two chefs. They head to the Baha- mas for the finale, where they’ll each need to bring to life a tion, Bravo has scheduled the season premiere of “Top Chef Masters” for the following Wednesday. For those not fa- miliar with it, the spinoff is more of a pro-tour version of “Top Chef.” Given that the contestants are already estab- lished, world-renowned chefs, it’s more of a battle of culinary styles and techniques as op- posed to a showcase for indi- viduals out to make a name for themselves. But make no mis- take, tempers and egos can still flare in the kitchen as they compete to win $100,000 for the charity of their choice. Viewers may be a bit sur- prised by some of the changes lined up for the show’s third season. Gone is the star-based judging system -- the competi- tion will now run along the same guidelines and format as the original series. The new season also brings a new host: Australian celebrity chef Curtis Stone (“Take Home Chef,” “America’s Next Great Restau- rant”) takes over hosting du- ties from former host Kelly Choi. There’s a new judge, too: food critic and author Ruth Re- ichl joins James Oseland at the judging table. And of course, a slew of celebrity judges will be featured throughout the sea- son, including “Mad Men’s” Christina Hendricks, rock group Maroon 5 and recording artist Kelis. So what’s next for the fran- chise? “Top Chef Junior,” a teenage version, is reportedly in the works. The series has also gone north of the border with a “Top Chef Canada” pre- miering there in a few weeks. But for those who just can’t get enough of the original show, rest assured that casting calls have already gone out for “Top Chef’s” ninth season, which will premiere later this year.
