The cabler is set to debut the five-part miniseries “Mildred Pierce” later this month, and has landed actress Kate Wins- let for the title role. Based on the classic 1941 novel by James M. Cain, the story follows an independent, A/Pine Ridge Grocery B/Smoker Friendly 1 x 4 newly divorced woman who struggles to redefine her life and keep her family together during the Great Depression. The episodes, which begin with a two-part premiere on Sunday, March 27, will also star Guy Pearce (2010’s “The King’s Speech”), Evan Rachel Wood (“True Blood”), James LeGros (“Mercy”), Brian F. O’Byrne (“FlashForward”) and Melissa Leo (2010’s “The Fighter”). Winslet’s star power has only grown since the late ‘90s, when her first two big films, “Sense and Sensibility” (1995) and “Titanic” (1997), made her a household name. Since then, she has turned in critically ac- claimed performances in “Quills” (2000), “Iris” (2001), “Eternal Sunshine of the Spot- less Mind” (2004), “Finding Neverland” (2004), “The Read- er” (2008) and “Revolutionary Road” (2008), earning multiple awards and nominations along the way. This new HBO project will mark her first TV appearance since the early ‘90s, before she became a film star. The miniseries is being di- rected by Todd Haynes (2007’s “I’m Not There”), who also co- wrote the teleplay with Jon Raymond. The last time Cain’s tale was adapted for the screen was in 1945 for the Michael Curtiz-di- rected film of the same name. It featured Joan Crawford as the title character, and her per- formance earned her the best actress Oscar. DAMON’S GOOD WILL: As tabloid articles seem to sug- gest, the people destined to save the world are celebrities. George Clooney helped pro- mote peaceful elections in Su- dan, John Travolta flew his plane to Haiti after the earth- quake to lend a hand, and su- per-couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are involved in so many causes it’s hard to keep track. Now, another actor is hop- ing to use his fame to promote a forward-thinking cause. Matt Damon will be the face of a new episode in PBS’s Benson 1 x 5 A/Van’s Auto B/Nicole’s Family Dining 1 x 3 B/Maury’s Restaurant 1 x 3 award-winning series “Jour- ney to Planet Earth” when he hosts “Plan B: Mobilizing to Save Civilization.” The 90-minute documenta- ry, which is the 12th episode in the series, will premiere on the public broadcaster on Wednes- day, March 30. Based on the book by revo- lutionary environmentalist Lester Brown, the episode will feature Brown, Nobel Laureate Paul Krugman, Pulitzer Prize winner Thomas Friedman and former politician Bruce Bab- bitt. They will lend their thoughts on the continuing struggle to combat global warming.
