Cleveland County Senior Games, April 11-15, 2011. Cleveland County Senior Games is a part of the North Carolina Senior Games, which are held throughout our state. Senior Adults, age 55 (by December 31, 2011) and above in Cleveland County are eligible to participate in these games. Local medal winners (golfers must meet minimum performance scores to compete at the State Finals) are eligible to qualify for the State Games. The State Finals will be held in Raleigh, September 26-Oct 1, 2011. Gardner-Webb University is the host for opening ceremonies on Monday, April 11th at 9:00 a.m. with many track and field events to follow. The closing-awards ceremonies will be held at the Neal Senior Center on Friday, April 29, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. The series of athletic/recreational events will be held throughout Cleveland and Gaston Counties, at the following locations: The Leona Smith Neal Center, Gardner-Webb University, Crest High School, Kings Mountain High School, Dover YMCA, Pine Grove Golf Course, Challenger Three Amusement Park, Shelby City Park and AMF Gastonia Lanes (transportation to the AMF Gastonia Lanes will be provided for up to 14 individuals – first come, first serve). Join the friendly competition and choose from indoor and outdoor activities. Remember the F words: Fun, Family, Fellowship and Fitness are the key components of Senior Games. Cleveland County’s Senior Games motto is “Fitness for the Fun of It! According to the NC Senior Games, Inc. “you don’t grow old from playing, you grow old from not playing.” Physical activity not only helps keep adults physically fit, but believe it or not it helps keep them mentally fit as well because activity creates or rather helps new brain cells grow. New brain cell growth helps slow the onset of age related dementia, so help your body and your brain, become active in Senior Games. PLEASE NOTE: The Cleveland County Senior Games/SilverArts program will strictly enforce and adhere to the entry deadlines in fairness to all athletes/artists. This rule is upheld by North Carolina Senior Games, Inc. for State Finals and our Local Senior Games is emulating the state organization. Early Bird Deadline: March 28, 2011 (entry fee = $10) and final deadline for all entry forms is 5:00 pm on April 1, 2011 (entry fee = $15). For more information or questions regarding Cleveland County Senior Games, call Lisa Abernethy at 704-482-3488 or Monty Thornburg at 704-734-0447. This program is sanctioned by the North Carolina Seniors, Inc. NCSG, Inc. is sponsored statewide by the North Carolina Division of Aging and Adult Services. The Council on Aging/Neal Senior Center is seeking the names of Cleveland County Golden Nineties – We’re So Proud! residents who are 90 years old and above. Each year the Council on Aging celebrates the longevity of this extraordinary population of Cleveland County as well as Older Americans Month with a very special luncheon. Being 90 years old or more is definitely something to shout about and the COA/Senior Center plans to shout out loud and proud as we celebrate the lives and accomplishments of the county’s Golden 90’s and above. If you know someone who is 90 years old or older, please contact the Senior Center at 704-482-3488 or via email at labernethy@agingcouncil.org (please provide mailing address and birth date of the 90+ year old person), so that we may personally invite him or her to the luncheon. Providing this information to the Senior Center does not automatically sign said per- son up to attend the luncheon, it just guarantees that an invitation will be mailed. Persons attending the luncheon will have an opportunity to make reservations for the luncheon beginning in April 2011. Start Your Engines For Safe Driving Class The Council on Aging/Senior Center offers the AARP’s Safe Driving Course several times a year, which are taught by AARP trained instructor and the next class is just around the corner. The four hour class will be offered at the Leona Smith Neal Senior Center, located at 100 T.R. Harris Drive, Shelby, from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm (1 hour break for lunch) and then 1:00 – 3:00 pm on March 30, 2011. As we age, our reflexes become slower, our vision and hearing gradually diminish all of which affects our ability to drive safely. The AARP’s Safe Driving Program includes a comprehensive curriculum designed especially for the older motorist. Participants age 50 and above will refine existing skills and develop safe, defensive driving techniques. Also included is a review on how to handle adverse weather conditions and traffic hazards as well as learn about the effects of aging and medications on driving. For more information or to register for the class, please call the Senior Center at 704- 482-3488. There is a fee of $12 for AARP members or $14 for non-AARP members to cover the cost for materials.
