C-4 Wednesday, February 12, 2014 The Press-Dispatch H Church news Continued from page 1 PAWS pet of the week "I have learned more from my dog than from all the great books I have read. The wisdom of my dog is the prod- uct of his inability to conceal his wants. When he yearns to be loved . . . he puts his head on my lap, wags his tail and looks up at me with kind eyes, waiting to be petted"—Gerry Spence. This week PAWS is featuring a ram- bunctious young Cocker named Rags, who is an absolute charmer and per- forms with unbounded enthusiasm, wagging his tail joyously to everyone he meets. We believe he is an English Cocker Spaniel, parti-colored black and white, energetic, playful and easy to please. He is approximately two years old, neutered and ready to be some- one's special Valentine. Sunday school lesson for Feb. 16 —Show Your Faith By Your Works—Back- ground scripture—James 2:14-26. Last week's trivia ques- tion: What two compo- nents does James say must be combined to create per- fection? Answer: Faith and works—James 2:22. Next week's trivia ques- tion: James identifies Abra- ham as his first example of true faith by his premier ex- ample of the willingness to sacrifice his son Isaac. Study Genesis 22:1-12, which verse indicates his faith at its strongest? Mini message: incomplete faith To be in agreement with the Christian teaching of values is merely having in- tellectual assent. This is not true faith. Even Satan and his demons know who God is but just knowing doesn't constitute the action of faith. This can only be done through works. True faith transforms our conduct as well as our thoughts into action. We cannot earn salvation through works, but if our life remains unchanged by our profession of faith, then our faith is worthless. If you have true faith, you must use it. Until next week—A work- less faith is a worthless faith. May God bless. "Be mindful to be a bless- ing, especially to those of the household of faith" (Ga- latians 6:10). As you begin your day, ask God to speak to you about what you can do to help oth- ers today and every day. When Jesus' disciples asked Him which of them was the greatest, He replied that whoever wished to be great had to be a servant (see Mat- thew 20 :26). If we only want to hear from God about what will help us, then He may not have much to say because He is not interested in help- ing you be selfish. If we tru- ly care for others, we often find that in the midst of our effort to help them, our own problems are divinely solved by God without much effort on our part. In God's Kingdom, the position of "servant" is the highest. Christ came to serve and not to be served (see Mark 10 :45). Anyone can serve if they are willing to do so. Just lis- ten to what people say they want and need and get busy serving. As you serve oth- ers, your intimacy with Christ will increase because He is a servant. Hope to see you in church. Pray for those on our Feb- ruary prayer list. Read Matthew 7:7-12. "Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, so al- so do to them" (Matthew 7:12). Our heavenly Father asks us to live up to His com- mands, but He also gives us His power and love to carry it out. We need only to ask Him for it. Everyone welcome to come and worship. Dr. Robert Asa, Minister PAtoK A grove u.M. ChurCh 1325 W. Co. rd. 475 s. Winslow "If I speak with human el- oquence and angelic ecsta- sy but don't love, I'm noth- ing but the creaking of a rusty gate. If I speak God's Word with power, revealing all his mysteries and making everything as plain as day, and if I have faith that says to a mountain, "Jump," and it jumps, but I don't love, I'm nothing. If I give everything I own to the poor and even go to the stake to be burned as a martyr, but I don't love, I've gotten nowhere. So no mat- ter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I'm bankrupt without love" (I Corinthians 13:1-2, The Message). In this life, no matter how hard we try, we cannot be sinless (I John 1:8 -10). On- ly by the blood of Jesus does God see us as perfect but God does command us to love one another. "But for now, until that completeness, we have three things to do to lead us toward that consummation: Trust steadily in God, hope unswervingly, love unswerv- ingly, love extravagantly. And the best of these three is love" (I Corinthians 13:13, The Message). You are always welcome in our church. Come and ex- perience God's love. Bob Deel, Pastor Alan Christmas, Reporter Mt. PisgAh g.b. ChurCh The trees of the Lord are full of sap. I will be as the dew to Israel: he shall grow as the lily, and cast forth his roots as Lebanon. His branches shall spread, and his beauty shall be as the ol- ive tree, and his fragrance like Lebanon. Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is. For he shall be as a tree plant- ed by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be anxious in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit. I the Lord have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree, and have made the dry tree to flourish. The righteous shall flour- ish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Those that are planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing.
