Pike Central, which was seeded fourth in the 200 -yard medley relay with a time of 2:12.01, finished sec- ond with a time of 2:14.96 in its pre- liminary heat on Thursday behind second-seeded Vincennes Lincoln. However, the Lady Alices, who won Thursday's preliminary heat with a time of 2:03.99, were disqualified because of a false start and did not advance to Saturday's finals. "Vincennes Lincoln probably should have been right up there with Jasper, fighting for that first- place spot," McKinney said. "Any- thing can happen at the sectional, and when that happened, it helped us secure a third-place spot instead of fourth place." The team of Frederick, Claridge, Sutherland and Dudenhoeffer also placed fifth in the 200 -yard free- style relay with a season-best time of 1:57.29 after entering the sec- tional meet with the sixth-fastest seed time of 1:58.61. Frederick also placed in two in- dividual events, finishing fifth in the 200 -yard freestyle with a time of 2 :13.17—breaking her own school record time of 2:13.60 set two weeks earlier during the Pock- et Athletic Conference meet—and sixth in the 100 -yard backstroke with a time of 1:10.36, just one- tenth of a second off her season- best time in that event. "That's a big accomplishment for a freshman, to come in and be able to pull them kind of places out of that sectional," McKinney said. "That's a tough sectional. You're competing with a lot of talented swimmers. A lot of kids, that's all they do is swim." "I'd say Maya's probably one of my only girls that does swim year round," McKinney continued. "She does swim the summer months and stuff like that, but she also does play volleyball and some other sports. She's not just a swimmer. So for her to come in as a 14-year- old freshman going up against some 18 -year-old swimmers, she held her own and she did really, really well." Freshman Sylvia Henson, mean- while, placed fourth in diving with a score of 272.25 during Saturday's finals to advance to the diving re- gional meet at Bloomington North on Tuesday, Feb. 12. Henson is the first Lady Char- ger diver to advance to the region- al meet since Missy ( Wilkerson) Sparks—who is in her first year as Pike Central's diving coach— in 1998. "We haven't had a girl diver for the last couple of years," McKin- ney said. "Jordan Blocker was our last diver (in 2011). She missed going to the regional by just a few points. So having a girl on the board and doing that is a big plus, and it helps out on the team score, also." McKinney said having Sparks as the team's diving coach has paid dividends, with the boys' team as well as the girls' team. "She knows what she's talking about on the diving board," McK- inney said. "She's been in those kids' shoes. She knows what kind of hard work it takes to get there. As long as she wants to continue to coach, we've got a spot for her and our diving program will just keep getting stronger and stronger." Claridge placed seventh in the 100 -yard backstroke with a time of 1:22.12, beating her previous personal-best time of 1:22.45. Last year, Claridge placed 12th in the event with a time of 1:25.09. "She did a great job for us," McKinney said. "She works hard and I was glad to see somebody like that get into the finals of her last meet, because that's fun for those kids to be able to walk out to the music and hear her name called out. They make it a big thing and it should be. I wish all of my girls get to have that exp erience." Kendall Dudenhoeffer, mean- while, placed ninth in the 100 -yard butterfly with a time of 1:15.91 and 10th in the 50 -yard freestyle with a time of 28.47. " T hursday, in the ( butter) fly, she didn't have a very good time," McKinney said of Kendall Dudenhoeffer, who posted a time of 1:19.12 in the event during pre- liminaries. "She was close to her personal best, but she just wasn't there on Thursday. And then she turned around and came out and swam Saturday in the consolation heat and she was a little over three seconds faster than her best time (1:18.43)." "That's just one of those things that happens," McK inney said. "She's the type of kid that she puts everything into swimming. She works harder than any girl I've met in my life." Kendall Dudenhoef fer, who placed 15th in the 200 -yard indi- vidual medley during last year's sectional meet, was seeded fifth in the 50 -yard freestyle with a time of 27.17 but posted the 10th-best time—28.78 —during preliminar- ies on Thursday. "We moved her to the 50 free- style because we thought she had a better shot getting to the finals in the 50 than she would have in the (individual medley)," McKin- ney said. "I still feel that was the best call that we could have made, trying to get her into that spot." "It didn't happen," McKinney added. "That's kind of the gam- ble you take. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and that was one we didn't win on. But she swam just as hard in her other spots, and on Saturday, she got to go out with the relay team and do that." In addition: • Sutherland placed 11th in the 100 -yard freestyle with a time of 1:05.97, besting her previous per- sonal-best time of 1:07.69 by almost two seconds. • Sophomore Helen Dudenhoef- fer placed 14th in the 500 -yard free- style with a time of 7:15.73. • Senior Lauren Luff placed 16th in the 100 -yard freestyle with a time of 1:13.77. • Junior Alivia Cummings placed 16th in the 100 -yard back- stroke with a time of 1:34.28, best- ing her previous personal-best time of 1:34.98. • Junior Chloe Keepes placed 16th in the 500 -yard freestyle re- lay with a time of 7:29.56. The team of Keepes, Cummings, Helen Dudenhoeffer and Luff placed ninth in the 400 -yard free- style relay with a time of 5:01.19. During Thursday's preliminar- ies: • Claridge placed 18th in the 200 -yard freestyle with a time of 2:38.74. • Cummings placed 19th in the 200 -yard freestyle with a time of 2:38.89. • Luff placed 19th in the 50 -yard freestyle with a time of 31.24. n Sutherland placed 20th in the 50 -yard freestyle with a time of 31.29. • Helen Dudenhoeffer placed 18th in the 100 -yard butterfly with a time of 1:35.93. • Junior Ashley Davis placed 23rd in the 100 -yard freestyle with a time of 1:20.44. • Sophomore Kaylee Gray placed 17th in the 500 -yard free- style with a time of 7:35.85. • Henson placed 17th in the 100 -yard backstroke with a time of 1:23.66, beating her previous personal-best time of 1:28.92. • Keepes placed 18th in the 500 -yard backstroke with a time of 1:26.84, beating her previous- best time of 1:27.38. McKinney said inclement weath- er which forced an early dismissal on Tuesday, Feb. 4, and cancelled school on Wednesday, Feb. 5, al- so prevented the Lady Chargers from practicing two days prior to the preliminaries on Thursday, which resulted in slower than ex- pected times. "We didn't get to swim Tuesday or Wednesday and the girls were a little sluggish," McKinney said. "We didn't have our best on Thurs- day. We did get quite a few girls qualified that should've, but we didn't have that fire in us Thurs- day night. For whatever reason, we just didn't swim real well." However, Pike County Schools Superintendent Suzanne Blake per- mitted McKinney to open the pool for one hour on Friday, which McK- inney credited for helping the team during Saturday's finals. "I think it helped to come in and kind of calm themselves down and kind of stretch out," McKin- ney said. "We went through some technical stuff and more or less got them back to where they were thinking about swimming." "When you sit out of any sport for two or three days, your body and your brain get on other waves, and you don't think about it," McK- inney added. "So having that hour practice, I think it helped a bunch. We came out Saturday and put ev- erything together and the girls swam really, really well." Six Lady Chargers received rib- bons on the awards stand in six dif- ferent events during Saturday's fi- nals. "That's probably the most kids we've had on the awards stand since I've been coaching the girls," McKinney said. "We had a lot of kids up there. I couldn't be more proud of them. They worked hard this season and they did a really good job for us." Jasper, as a team, claimed its eighth straight sectional title with 492 points, while Heritage Hills placed second with 282 points, fol- lowed by Vincennes Lincoln (275 points), Bedford-North Lawrence (254) and Southridge (249). Tell City, which placed fourth during the PAC meet, one spot ahead of Pike Central, was sev- enth with 147 points, followed by Northeast Dubois (101), Tecum- seh (59), Wood Memorial (54) and South Spencer (53). "When we walked out of there, all the kids had their heads held up high and they knew they'd do- ne something really good," McKin- ney said. "(Assistant coach) Mike (Bohnert) and I both, as coaches, were pretty proud of them."
