"Alex just absolutely did everything we talked about during that third period and ended up getting two take- downs and a pin, in one pe- riod," Hewig added, "which is pretty impressive against a kid that we couldn't get a point on the last time we wrestled." Because the Chargers did not practice from Tues- day, Feb. 4, through Thurs- day, Feb. 6 due to inclement weather, Hewig said that conditioning might have played a role in Roberts' sec- ond-round loss. "We came into that match a little under-conditioned, not being able to practice," Hewig said. "It wasn't a lack of heart or anything. I just feel like, physically, we weren't prepared to the best we could. I'm not saying what would have happened there if we were conditioned, but I think that played a part in the final score." Three other Pike Cen- tral wrestlers, after placing fourth in their weight divi- sions at the sectional meet a week earlier, dropped first- round decisions. Freshman Blake Carroll, competing in the 106 -pound weight class, ended the sea- son with a 33-12 record with technical fall to Mount Ver- non freshman Paul Konrath (42-2). "Blake pulled into the number-one kid in the state, first round, from Mount Ver- non, and we knew that was going to be a tough one," Hewig said. Senior Austin Bolin, com- peting in the 138 -pound weight class, ended the sea- son with a 13-8 record after dropping a loss by major de- cision, 14-5, to Castle junior Patrick Schnell (36 -7). "Austin wrestled just a terrific match against a re- ally tough opponent," Hewig said. "It was tied for most of the match, and Austin was wrestling really well. Aus- tin just had to go for a move, being down by one, and got caught. The score wasn't indicative of how good of a match it was. It was a really exciting match." Senior Devin Phillips, competing in the 145 -pound weight class, ended the sea- son with a 34-13 record af- ter losing by technical fall to Evansville Memorial sopho- more Chance Williams (36 - 6). "Devin ran into a tough kid," Hewig said. "Devin pre- pared really well for it. But we pulled a number-one seed and it was a tough matchup for us. The kid matched up really well with Devin. I felt like Devin wrestled really hard." Hewig said that "it hurts" to lose a senior like Phillips, who, along with Miller, are the program's first 100 -bout winners since Kendle. "The sport of wrestling owes Devin a lot, Devin doesn't owe the sport of wrestling," Hewig said. "He's put in as much effort as he possibly could. It's hard to lose that one because I think Devin doesn't have anything to feel sorry about. He went out and gave it his all." Hewig said that he was looking forward to seeing how Miller and Roberts fare during this Saturday's semi- state meet. "Dalton will be fine; he's a veteran at semistate," Hewig said. "It is not a very big step off from the show they put on at semistate at the Ford Center to state. It's pretty im- pressive. It's a big stage. It's a lot to look at when you get down there, but I think once everybody gets settled in, we can have a pretty good day down there." "At semistate, there's not a bad wrestler, and if you can win your first one, anything can happen that second round," Hewig added. "The first match, of course, we're game-planning for harder than anything, but that sec- ond match, we're trying to make sure we're in condition to be able to go in and wres- tle that second match in as good a shape as we do the first match." The top four finishers in each weight division advance to the state meet at Banker's Life Fieldhouse in Indianapo- lis on Saturday, Feb. 22. T he last Pike Central w restler to advance to state was Kendle, who, af- ter finishing second in the 112-pound weight division at semistate, placed seventh at state.
