Local Eats Casual Chic Cassie’s Cafe With Roxbury becoming more of a destination, Cassie’s Café on Main Street is a convenient place for business and family gatherings, or if you just want to have a cup of coffee and read a magazine by the counter or lay on the sofa. The motto is “simple food done right.” And yes, you won’t see any fried food in the menu, but you will see plenty of simple, yet gourmet choices for break- fast and lunch. Cassie Grabowski has lived in Rox- bury since 1993. In 1994, she opened her first restaurant, Cassie’s Kitchen, in Andes. Cassie’s Kitchen was a popular place for about 11 years, serving om- elettes, sandwiches, soups and meatloaf to a clientele of primarily farmers. But Roxbury is a little different. In 2008, Grabowski and her partner Bob Ackershoek, who is also a DJ at WIOX Community Radio Station in Roxbury, bought Bud’s Country Store, a place that had been around since the 1940s. “This was a gathering place for the community,” Grabowski said, “and we didn’t want to see that disappear.” Grabowski and Ackershoek renovated the store, painted walls in a shade of red called “raspberry truffle” and brought in newly crafted wooden chairs, tables and counter. A popular item on the menu is the TLT — fresh roasted turkey, turkey bacon, lettuce, tomato and cranberry mayo. The chili soup, turkey or beef, is also a popular item. It’s not too spicy, has plenty of veggies and beans, is topped with cheddar cheese, and served with a 12 O-Town Scene Feb. 17, 2011 fresh-baked roll or a corn muffin. The Reuben is a classic, satisfying option — corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Thousand Island dress- ing on grilled rye. As is the Buffalo-style chicken topped with Buffalo sauce, lettuce and bleu-cheese dressing. There are also 17 different kinds of burgers on the menu. The breakfast menu is just as tempting. Grabowski cooks many kinds of om- elettes — cheese, spinach, mushrooms, Western-style, Spanish-style, Italian-veg- gie, Greek with feta. All are served with homemade fries and buttered toast. Pancakes, waffles and French toast are always in the menu as well. And eggs Benedict and other specialty items are offered on holidays. The menu also includes specialties for children such as the “Mickey Mouse” pancake with bananas for eyes, choco- late chips for lips and strawberries for nose. Cassie’s Café offers cakes, pies and cookies, and also caters for special events. Banana cream pie, Mom’s choc- olate cake with white icing and reduced sugar cookies are much-sought-after in the area. Breakfast is served all day. Daily spe- cials are posted every morning on Fa- cebook. Special weekends and holidays are crowded. To make a reservation or place an order, call 326-7020. Cassie’s Café is at 53535 State Route 30 in Roxbury, and is open Monday through Sunday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is closed Wednesday. _ Simona David
