Along with Eaker will be, angler Ken Cook and B.A.S.S. editor Dave Precht. There will be a dinner on the 18th where Eaker will be joined by his daughter and her husband, as well as his son Guy Jr. Unfortunately his wife Pat will not be able to make the trip. Two thousand eleven will mark the first time since 1979 that the B.A.S.S. season started without Eaker on board. Eaker retired last year to spend more time with his wife Pat, whose health has worsened in the last few years. “I want to be here for Pat, she has supported me all these years and she needs me here now more than ever,” said Eaker. “It’s very tough on her when I am away and to follow the circuit, I would be gone for weeks at a time.” Eaker isn’t hanging up the fishing rod and reel just yet though. “I will fish the PAA circuit, it’s only 4 events.” I asked Guy what one of his best memories were in his long fish- ing career. “I fished American Bass from 1975 to 1979. I picked up my first win in 1977 at Lake Seminole and won Angler of the Year that same year, and took second ( in A o Y ) the next two years. The fall of ‘79 I joined B.A.S.S. and have been there ever since. While we were talking fishing and the Classic, I couldn’t resist asking my old friend his thoughts about this year’s Classic. “Oh, I think it will be one heck of a tournament. Guys will be making very long runs and I think there will be a lot of fish caught,” shared Eaker. “Ok, I said, who do you think has the upper hand.” “You have to pick Greg Hackney”, says Eaker. “He knows that area as well as anyone, all the little creeks and hidden areas, deep holes and such. You can never over look Kevin Van Dam either, he excels in this type event.” “What about a dark horse, someone that most haven’t heard of that could do really well”, I followed up with. “My buddy Bill Lowen. This could shape up to be his kind of tournament, “ he fired back. “Ok, one last question, what’s it gonna take to win this year’s Classic”, I ask. “A lot of things can play into this year’s event,” he started. “All this snow, rain and ice that the middle of the country is getting is going to flow down river and make it down to the Delta eventually. Will it make it before, during or after the tournament could mean awesome catches or just a so-so event. A guy has to find quality fish, because most everybody will find fish, but you have to have quality AND, you have to have enough of them to last for all 3 days of the tournament. One good day just will not work in my opinion”. Guy Eaker Sr. Congrats to a very good friend and very deserving man on making it to the Bass Fishing Hall of Fame. Our conversation ended like thousands before, take care my friend and call me, lets go fishing again sometime. Outdoor Connection Outdoor Truths ...get out & enjoy nature! By Gary Miller By Several years ago, it was not unusu- al to make one or two trips per week to wade the Cherokee Lake. Late winter always proved to hold enough of the bass variety to keep me fi shing even in the most extreme conditions. These trips usually only lasted about half of the day and since I kept my equipment in my truck, I only needed a short no- tice and a good excuse. I can remember one day arriving at a favorite spot in the mid afternoon. It was cold and blustery. Even though I had dressed warm, the cold air was blowing hard in my face. It was a head- wind that was so strong casting was diffi cult. I fought the circumstances for about an hour before I gave in and de- cided to go elsewhere. A few hundred yards behind me was a small unexcit- ing place, but the wind would be to my back and blocked somewhat by the hills on one side. There, in that area, were little dead stickweeds that were scattered throughout. They may hold a bass but there were now only a couple of hours left before dark. In those two hours I caught six largemouth and all were keeper size. I was so excited about that new little spot that I made plans to return the next day; earlier and with a friend. That next afternoon did not disappoint us. When the smoke FOR SALE FOR SALE BEAUTIFUL HORSE HAY. Pre- mium Quality, Fescue square bales, fertilized and clean. Gary Miller Aiming Outdoorsmen Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ oward Christ had cleared, we hand landed twenty one bass over fi fteen inches long. Just two days before, I had cursed the wind and the circumstance it had put me in. I had complained of the dif- fi culties and obstacles that I was fac- ing. I had fought against the prospects of leaving the familiar and comfortable place that I knew, for the unknown, untested, and unappealing. But to get to the most fruitful area, I had to be forced out of my safe and secure confi nes. I had to “cast my nets on the other side.” This is how God works many times in our lives when He wants to get more out of our lives or when He is looking for someone to serve in a certain way or place. He simply makes the place that we’re in, too hard to bear. He makes the going so tough that we have no other choice than to look in other ar- eas. It’s one of the ways that God uses to get you from where you are now, to where He wants you to be. So the next time the winds of cir- cumstance push you from your favor- ite place, remember that God is simply increasing your territory. www outdoortruths.or SHELBY www..outdoortruths.org COME SEE THE EXPERT TRANSMISSION RANSMISSION Service & PSPECIALISTS PECIALISTS vice & Parts ts Work Guaranteed 734 Nalley Drl ork Guaranteed 734 Na ley Dr. Shelby, NC Shelby, NC 704-482-8756 Hal 704-482-8756 FOR SALE FOR SALE FIREWOOD FOR SALE. FISH FINS FISH FINS I’m willing to bet that few anglers have given much thought to the fins in a fish, let alone, their purpose. Fish use their fins primarily for stability, maneuvering and various other tasks. Fish like the bass retract their fins when they want to speed up. The pectoral fins are used as planers when extended, enabling them to dive or climb. They can also help the fish turn right or left, as well as back up. The pelvic fins play a similar role. The dorsal, the soft ray dorsal and anal fins are used mainly as keels to keep the fish straight up while swimming. The tail fin follows for forward movement, maneuverability and speed.
