Corning 2011 Drivers welcome Corning served as the home of one of California’s earliest truck stops in the 1940s and has been a hot stop for truckers since. The city is halfway between Portland, Ore. and Los Angeles, and three truck stops at South Avenue —Flying J, TA and Petro — take advantage of the central location. Corning’s truck stops are appreciated by the city for the hundreds of jobs and the sales tax revenue they provide. Did you know? The three travel centers bring in more than $500,000 in sales tax annually. “They provide a tremendous amount of sales tax,” Corning City Manager Steve Kimbrough said. “It’s like having a Walmart on each of the three corners.” The truck stops are Corning’s second- highest source for sales tax revenue. The stops, also called travel centers, bring a $500,000 to the city every year, giving Corning the highest per capita sales tax revenue in the north state, helping to fund the police and Major improvements were made to the South Avenue interchange with Interstate 5 in 2009, easing the way for trucks visiting Corning’s three large travel centers. fire departments. Many jobs in Corning are at the truck stops. Each truck stop employs more than 100 people, meaning about 350 to 400 jobs are at the one intersection. “Corning has gained a reputation as a good place for commercial development,” Kimbrough said. Wright said that is because Corning has “cheap, available land and a plentiful, cheap work force.” Christine Manes, general manager for Flying J, said Corning is a great stopping point off Interstate 5 because it provides a truck stop “away from the hub of the city,” she said. “It doesn’t disturb the residents.” The four-way stop offers three good choices so it’s convenient to the customers. “Some Of the Best Prices in Town - That’s No Hay” We specialize in customer service associatedfeed RICHFIELD FEED & SUPPLY PURINA Golden Fire Pellets Pelletized Feed DELIVERY AVAILABLE DAC • Farrier Supplies Dog Food • Pet Supplies Low Cost Vaccines Goat Supplies Livestock Panels Show Feed & Supplies Horse Tack HAY, ALFALFA, STRAW, GRASS, WHEAT, FORAGE MIX M-F 8:30-5:30 • SAT. 8-4:30 5605 HWY 99W • CORNING (530) 824-4633 EXPANDED INVENTORY & SUPPLIES 22 Corning 2011
