S. Navy. Since this past November, the “battle cry” for the class became “We Love You Sailor Joe!” Recently, when he was home on leave, “Sailor Joe” surprised the Jefferson School class when he showed up to meet and thank them. For the past two months the fi rst graders wrote him letters and sent drawings and care packages to him, but had never met him. When he came, he told them about all the places in the world he had been on board the ship, USS VELLA GULF CG 72. They asked a lot of questions about life aboard a U.S. Navy ship and liked the idea that he gets pizza once a week. However, Joe told them he never got livermush on the ship, but he had been to the Shelby Cafe earlier that morning to have some. It was a special day for the kids who care at Jefferson Elementary. “Sailor Joe” Stops By To Thank First Graders That Adopted Him –M. A.
