Arrowhead senior helps Warhawks to second at state By Daniel Mike Freeman Staff WAUKESHA – Mary Warren has swam in some interesting places. Warren has competed in area, state and national competitions while swimming for the Lake Country Phoenix club team as well as the Arrowhead High School girls team. But she really got a chance to witness some different venues when she was in third and fourth grade while her family lived in China. "We did a lot of international meets," said Warren, a senior at Arrowhead. "We would fly to places like Singapore for meets. "It was a great experience." Warren, who learned to speak Chinese while living in the country – and still learns the language at Arrowhead – is more regional in the fall. She's been a key figure for the Warhawks for four years and helped them finish second at this year's Division 1 championships. "She's very selfless and always has been," Arrowhead coach Ruth Ann Ahnen said. "She's always been a hard worker, always Robert F. Borkowski/Special to The Freeman Arrowhead's Mary Warren saw many winning times throughout her high school swimming career. puts 100 percent into practice. By the way she works, she brings everybody else up a level. That's the kind of swimmer you want on your team. "She's unassuming to be around, but when she's on the blocks she's all competitor. She hates to lose. She'll do anything she needs to do to get her hand on the finish line first." Warren joined Lake Country Phoenix when she was in first grade. She enjoyed swimming for many years, but never quite understood her potential until middle school. "It's been a big part of my life ever since I was little," Warren said. "I just kept swimming in my life, and I really enjoyed it. I didn't realize what I could do with my abilities until middle school when I got a junior national cut in the 50 free. "As I got more cuts, it became a bigger part of me." Warren has primarily been a sprint freestyler at Arrowhead, but it's not because she cannot perform the other strokes. "Mary doesn't have a weak stroke," Ahnen said. "She really is an allaround talent. She's good at back, breast, Warren fly, IM. Whatever you put her in, she's going to do well. "It comes down to what is she is best at, what puts her among the best in the state, and that is sprint freestyle." The stroke doesn't matter to Warren. As long as she's on the starting blocks, she is set to compete no matter the event. "I've changed strokes throughout my life," Warren said. "In China, I was a backstroker. I came back and was a breaststroker. Then, I mainly switched to sprint freestyle and the IM. I really love the short events. "I love racing. I love that rush of diving into the pool and trying to win a race. That gets my adrenaline pumping." Warren signed her letter of intent this week to swim at Northwestern University. "I went on a recruiting trip, and I just fell in love with the team," Warren said. "I just felt I fit there. "I really wanted somewhere where graduating with the school's name on the diploma would mean a big deal. Getting to swim, too, that hit two birds with one stone for me."
