The FREEMAN & ENTERPRISE Lake Country THIS MONTH INSIDE DECEMBER 2013 A SOUND DECISION Former radio personality Miles left biz to help others find their voice By Josh Perttunen Freeman Staff 4A Barbara Eash antiques column 5A Hello, Lake Country! Putting the 'personality' in radio personality From 1968 to 1991, Miles had stints at stations such as WRIT, WLUM, WOKY, WLIP and WJZQ, doing everything from delivering traffic reports to hosting morning and late-night programs to sharing midday news to producing commercials. One time, he even drew national media attention for falling asleep on air, leaving the record to scratch on an infinite loop, and prompting a response from the local police and fire departments. "My listeners had called them, concerned that something had happened to me," Miles recalled. "I give the responders credit, they wouldn't leave until they were sure I was alone (and not being held hostage.)" His dad had choice words for him when he got home, implying that the gaffe may have ruined his career. "But I didn't get fired," Miles chuckled. "Instead, I got promoted. And stations from across the country were calling me with offers." Miles said he got the idea for Miles Pro Audio Visual – which employs a trio of himself, his brother Gordon Miles Jr. and his nephew Nick Miles – while doing sound production in the studio. "That job led to an interest in video because I realized some bands might want to be videotaped in addition to Charles Auer/Freeman Staff Mike Miles talks about his time in radio while sitting in the video production center of the Delafield Common Council chambers.
