In its infancy, the genre’s shows grew from having cult- like fanbases to global expo- sure with incarnations in differ- ent countries. In the last few years, some reality stars have gained such fame and influ- ence in pop culture that they’ve been able to transition into scripted work. A/Pine Ridge Grocery B/Smoker Friendly 1 x 4 Now, the next phase has ar- rived: leading Hollywood ac- tors are being cast to portray reality stars in dramatized ver- sions of the original shows. Diane Lane, Tim Robbins and James Gandolfini are just a few of the A-list stars set to play the real-life people who were fea- tured in what is arguably the first-ever reality-TV show. HBO Films’ “Cinema Verite,” which will debut on HBO later this year, offers a dramatized, behind-the-scenes look at the making of the hit 1973 docu- series “An American Family.” The TV show followed the Louds, a nuclear family from Santa Barbara, Calif., that gained quite a bit of notoriety as TV’s first reality family. Known for their many dra- matic moments, such as when matriarch Pat Loud told her husband Bill she wanted a di- vorce in the middle of filming, the Louds paved the way for other families -- the Kar- dashians, the Osbornes and the Gosselins come to mind -- to seek fame through reality TV Patrick Fugit (2000’s “Almost Famous”), Kathleen Quinlan (1995’s “Apollo 13”), Lolita Davidovich (1998’s “Gods and Monsters”), Thomas Dekker (”Terminator: The Sarah Con- nor Chronicles”) and Shanna Collins (”Swingtown”). ANGEL’S NEW ‘ENGAGE- MENT’: With some magic tricks, you have to see them to believe them. With others, the illusions can be so fantastical that even the spectators can’t believe their eyes. Famed trickster Criss Angel will demonstrate his unbeliev- able talents when he appears as himself and performs an il- lusion in an upcoming episode of CBS’s “Rules of Engage- ment.” Angel will engage the imag- inations of stars David Spade, Patrick Warburton, Megyn Price, Bianca Kajlich, Oliver Benson 1 x 5 A/Van’s Auto B/Nicole’s Family Dining 1 x 3 B/Maury’s Restaurant 1 x 3 Hudson and Adhir Kalyan when he shares the small screen with them during the show’s Jan. 17 episode. Evidently, having his own TV series and a Las Vegas show isn’t enough exposure for the magician, who’s been called the Houdini of the new genera- tion. Angel has appeared in quite a few other TV shows in recent years in an attempt to expand his fanbase. In 2007, he played Luke Blade, a fictional version of himself, in an episode of “CSI: NY.” In the episode, the psy- chotic Blade kills people close to him in ways that mimic his illusions.
