Sasser arrested on drunken driving charges after crash By Andy Heuring Two people were arrested in Pike County on drunken driving charges. A Monroe City man escaped injury after crashing his car upside down Thanksgiving evening, but he didn't escape the long arm of the law. Donald E. Sasser, of 5636 S. Monroe School Rd., Monroe City, 60, was arrested on preliminary charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, resisting law enforcement and disorderly conduct. Sasser was driving his 2006 Ford ZX3 north on Highway 61 near CR 605 S. when he ran off the right side of the road in a curve, hit a ditch, overturned the vehicle on its side across Highway 61, hit an embank- ment and overturned onto its top. Deputy Jenkins estimated damage at between $5,000 and $10,000 damage in the 6:51 p.m. accident. Deputy Dallas Killian said while he was enroute to the wreck scene he was notified by central dispatch to expedite his run because the driver was being "unruly." Deputy Killian said when he arrived, Sasser was walking north in the southbound lane of Highway 61 with emergency personnel walking behind him. Killian said Sasser was identified as the person who crawled out of the vehicle following the crash. Killian said when he began to ask Sasser questions he got agitated and asked him for his license, Sasser got out his billfold started to remove something from it and then put it back in his pocket. Killian said when he asked Sasser when his last drink was, he replied two years ago. Sasser failed field sobriety tests and told Deputy Killian where he could put the breathalyzer tube. Deputy Killian said when he went to put away the breathalyzer, Sasser got aggressive with an EMT, so Killian asked him to put his hands behind his back to be cuffed. Instead, Sasser attempted to pull away and had to be physically restrained to be placed in handcuffs. Then he refused to get into the police car. According to Killian's report, Sasser also refused to get out of the car when they got to the jail. He then refused to cooperate with jail personnel and was placed into a holding cell. Early Sunday morning, a rural Petersburg man was arrested after police saw him driving erratically. Jeffrey R. Davis, 24, of 4832 W. SR 56, Petersburg, was arrested at 12:42 a.m. by Deputy Killian on a preliminary charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Deputy Killian said he noticed a tan pickup truck pull off of Fifth St. in Petersburg onto Highway 57, making a very wide turn. Deputy Killian said he followed the truck, seeing it go left center three times, and run off the road twice. Killian stopped the truck and talked to Davis. Killian said he smelled the odor of alcohol and asked Davis if he had been drinking. Davis said he had drank a few beers at the Bob Inn earlier. Davis failed field sobriety tests and while Killian was escorting him to his patrol car, Killian said Davis told him he had a pistol in his pocket. Killian removed the pistol and found it had three cartridges in the magazine. He was taken to the Pike County Jail, where he tested 0.09 percent for blood alcohol content. The legal limit in Indiana is 0.08 percent in Indiana. Davis was preliminarily charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated and carrying a handgun without a permit. Two arrested after report of shots fired on Thanksgiving By Andy Heuring An Otwell man was arrested on preliminary charges of minor consuming and contributing to the delinquency of a minor after police were called to investigate a report of shots being fired in the White Oak area. Lucas D. Myers, 20, of 2332 N. Spring St., Otwell, was arrested late Thanksgiving night. Pike County Deputy Sheriff Chad Tharp said he received a report from coon hunters that a truck drove by and fired several shots from the truck. Tharp said he went into the area and found a truck matching the description given him by the hunters. Tharp said the truck turned its lights off as Tharp turned onto 800 E. behind the truck. He said he lost sight of the truck un- til he saw its brake lights in a cornfield. He then turned his emergency lights on and the truck stopped. He said a juvenile male passenger got out of the truck and threw a 223 Savage rifle under the truck. Tharp said when he walked over to the truck he noticed a 44 magnum pistol on the dash board of the truck. He removed it and found all the shells in the cylinder had al- ready been fired. Deputy Tharp said the male juvenile admitted both guns were his and he was the only one shooting from the truck. Tharp said the juvenile and Myers both tested above the legal limit for blood alcohol content in Indiana. Myers was taken into custody on charges of minor consuming and con- tributing to the delinquency of a minor. Tharp said he found a small plastic bag in the pants pocket of the male juvenile containing a green leafy substance that field tested positive for marijuana. The juvenile was taken into custody and sent to the Vincennes Youth Village on juvenile charges. A third juvenile was released to his grandmother.
