God's Christmas Gift Christmas is a time when nearly every person's thoughts turn to gifts and giving. Some of us may open our gifts on Christmas morning while others may open them on Christmas Eve. There may be a few that will wait to a later date to open them, but every gift is given with one purpose, and that is that it will be opened by the one who receives it. Giving one another gifts has been a part of the Christmas celebration for many years. It symbolizes the love we have for each other, and it is a reminder that God loved us so much that He gave a wonderful gift for each one of us. Consider the greatest gift of all—God's Christmas gift to all of us. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). Have a blessed day. We invite all of you to come and worship with us. Roy Stilwell, Pastor Pam Lemond, Reporter main street presbyterian church 10th and Main Streets, Petersburg Sunday school 9:15 a.m.; Sunday worship 10:30 a.m. We have a nursery for children up to the age of seven and we also have a van route in Petersburg to pick anyone up. Come visit us, our doors are always open to you. Advent season This starts the beginning of the Advent season. The word Advent means "coming" or "arrival." The focus of the entire season is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ and the anticipation of the return of Christ the King. Advent also symbolizes the spiritual journey of individuals and a congregation, as they affirm that Christ has come, that He is present in the world today, and that He will come again in power. The beginning of Advent is a time for the hanging of the green, decoration of the church with evergreen wreaths, boughs, or trees that help to symbolize the new and everlasting life brought through Jesus Christ. The Advent wreath is a circular evergreen wreath with five candles, four around the wreath and one in the center. There are three purple or blue, one pink, and one white in the center. First candle lit means, Hope, second Love, third Joy, fourth Peace and finally the one in the center is the Christ Candle. It is lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. You can also do this in your home each Sunday to teach your children the importance of the Christmas season. Office hours: 9-noon, Monday-Friday. Phone: 3546844. Jesus warns against mere profession of salvation Jesus said, "Not everyone that saith unto me Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say unto me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me ye that work iniquity" (Matthew 7:21-23). Jesus died for our sins on the cross and told us to be born again of the Holy Spirit, to serve God and obey God's Word. We should love God in our heart, not just have a religion. God is love. The truth is Jesus was crucified. The truth is He still lives and went to prepare a place for you and me. But we must hold fast to the truth. Jesus is Lord and King. Don't get confused by the facts.
