dANGER SHOTS E nergy drinks have a series of risks accompanied with drinking them. Not only is there a risk of increased blood pressure, heart palpitations, gastrointestinal disturbance, increased urination, dizziness, irritability, nausea, nervousness, and jitters, but people could also experience allergic reactions. Any allergic reactions can include rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, shakiness, trouble sleeping, vomiting and if an addiction is formed, headaches and severe fatigue may occur due to withdrawal. The level of sugar in energy drinks has been linked to obesity, tooth decay, a risk of type two diabetes as well as a crash like feeling. Though caffeine has a series of negative side effects, coffee is much less dangerous than energy drinks. It may seem simple, however, a large amount of foods and drinks that will have far better effects without side effects include: water, almonds, quinoa, dark chocolate, bananas, bran flakes, salmon, curry, coconut, lentils, eggs, whole grains, citrus fruits, Greek yogurt, kale and ginger tea. Though it may seem inconvenient, exercising is shown to actually cause excess energy the next day. The more a person exercises, the more energy they will actually have. Not only that, but drinking coffee, or energy drinks, every day lessens the effect. Thus, every time said drink is consumed, it is less helpful. When getting up in the morning, rather than wake slowly and then drink coffee or an energy drink, wake the second the alarm goes off, thus you will immediately be more energized. Finally, one apple can wake a person up as much as a cup of coffee as shown by research. student popularity ix different classes at Red Bluff Union High School were polled on whether or not they drink energy drinks and if so, which ones. Thirty-eight percent of the six classes answered that they did not drink energy drinks, totalling to sixty-six students. Forty-one students said that they drink the energy drink brand Monster. Twenty-seven said they drink Red Bull. Ten said they drink Rebel, while only eight said they drink Rockstars while nineteen students drank an energy drink that was contained in the catagory other. One of the drinks included in other was coffee, though not technically an energy drink, they do contain a large amount of caffeine. Of those who answered that they did not drink energy drinks, the vast majority of the answers were either because they are not healthy, because they do not taste good and a few students answered no because they were too expensive, especially added up over time. Rockstar 5% S ENERGY DRINK EFFECTS I t has been shown that increased levels of caffeine consumption may impair cognition in the brain. Those who consume a small amount of caffeine may have a better reaction time, however, the amount in one Red Bull may severly lower response time. E nergy drinks, technically the caffeine in them, may lead to heart disease, strokes, artery hardening as well as elavated blood pressure. E nergy drinks such as Monster contain an ingrediant called Taurine which has been known to speed up kidney damage. R esearch has shown, based on studies and medical findings, that those who consume 2 or more soft drinks or energy drinks have an increased chance of developing pancreatic cancer and more likely to develop pancreatitis. S tudies have shown that women who drank or ate more than 200mg of caffeine per day were twice as likely to have a miscarriage.
