Vernon Turkey Classic, 10 a.m. High School Girls' Basketball: North Knox at Pike Central, Junior Varsity, noon; Varsity, 1:30 p.m. South Knox to collect toys, donations for Toys for Tots at scrimmage The South Knox High School athletic department will be collecting toys and cash donations for the Toys for Tots program at the ticket gate when the Spartans host a boys' basketball scrimmage against Pike Central on Wednesday, Nov. 20. Individuals planning to attend the event are asked to bring a toy or make a cash donation in change for entry. "Our team this year is going to be more physical than teams we've had in the last few years," Graham added. "We have some strong players physically so our kids will not back down to anybody." Howes led the Lady Chargers with 11 total points, while Halbrader added five points. Abbott and Whitehead had three points each and Hadley netted two points. "We will be a much more balanced team scoring this year, and when we scout teams, we always feel that it is harder to prepare for a balanced scoring team," Graham said. "We need to be more consistent with blocking out and not allowing ball reversal to happen as easily. We need to do a better job coming to the ball and finishing inside." In the junior varsity scrimmage, Mount Vernon outscored Pike Central 12-5 in the first quarter, when both teams played man-toman defense, and 12-8 in the second quarter, when both teams played zone defense. "We like to scrimmage Mount Vernon because they are always well-prepared, physical, disciplined, and we have a lot of common opponents," Graham said. "We do not play each other in the regular season. It helps us gauge where we are at. Their varsity sent 16-5 last year, JV went 17-2 and freshmen 11-0." Friday night's junior varsity game at South Knox will tip off at 6 p.m. The varsity contest will follow at approximately 7:30 p.m. The Lady Chargers will host Vincennes Lincoln on Tuesday, Nov. 19, with the JV game starting at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity game at approximately 7:30 p.m. Pike Central High School sophomore guard Alyx Abbott looks to make a pass during a preseason scrimmage.
