OLD NORTH STATE! Naomi Wise Rode Off To Death Not Marriage SUNTANZ Naomi Wise must have been the happiest young woman in Randolph County when she climbed upon Jonathan Lewis's horse that evening in 1808. At least the ugly rumors of Jonathan's unfaithfulness would be laid to rest, and her child would be born in wedlock. It was later in the evening, after dark, that a Mrs. Davis, who lived several miles down Deep River near the present-day town of Randleman, heard a series of loud screams from the direction of the river ford. They were unmistakably the cries of a woman in distress. Mrs. Davis and her sons, carrying torches, rushed to the ford. Hearing a horse galloping off the opposite side of the river but seeing nothing, they returned to the house, puzzled by the inci- dent. Meanwhile, William Adams and his wife wor- ried all night about the disappearance of their fos- ter daughter. The next morning, finding the empty pail and hoof prints at the spring, they called upon their neighbors, who joined in tracking the horse. Along the way, they mete Mrs. Davis who told of the occurrences the night before. Almost with- out hesitation the disappearance of Naomi and the screams in the dark were connected, and foul play was suspected. A brief search in the shallow river yielded the awful truth: Naomi Wise had been drowned. Her dress had been tied above her head, telltale proof of murder. All suspicious centered on Jonathan Lewis, and a search was begun. Late that night, after tracing his route all day searchers found him at the home of Stephen Huzza, sitting before the fireplace and holding Martha Huzza in his lap. While Jonathan Lewis was awaiting trial, he escaped from the "shackley frame jail" in Asheboro and disappeared. Though unavenged, the murder of Naomi Wise was not forgotten in Randolph County, and the song "Poor Naomi" (or "Omi Wise") spread far beyond the county's bor- ders. Nearly seven years later, word was received in Randolph that Jonathan Lewis had settled in Kentucky. Determined to bring the suspect to jus- tice, Sheriff Isaac Lane deputized Colonel Joshua Craven and George Swearengain, and the three set out for Kentucky. There they hired two hunters to lure and capture the strong escapee. Lewis was returned to Asheboro and again jailed. This time great care was taken to prevent his escape. But Lewis's lawyers exploited the obvious emotionalism of the community and suc- ceeded in having the trial moved to Guilford County. At Greensboro the state made a good but cir- cumstantial case. There had been no eyewitness- es, and after seven years memories were some- times confused and conflicting. The jury acquit- ted Jonathan Lewis, who rushed back to his Kentucky home. He never seemed the same after the trial, and his last years were spend in sadness. On his deathbed Jonathan Lewis confessed his crime to his father. On the pretext of taking her to a mag- istrate, he had lured Naomi away to drown her without trace so that he could marry Hetti Elliott. In the middle of Deep River, he grabbed her by the throat and it was at that point that Mrs. Davis hears the blood-curdling screams. The couple fell from the horse into the river, and with brute strength Jonathan held the struggling girl in the water until all resistance ended. Seeing the flares in the distance, he spurred his horse up the oppo- site bank and hurried off. Had Naomi Wise lived a normal life, she might never have been heard of beyond Randolph County. Her name, however, is now memorialized around the world buy the song which begins: Come all ye good people, I'd have you draw near, A sorrowful story you quickly shall hear; A story I'll tell you about N'omi Wise How she was deluded by Lewis's lies. - Originally published September 21, 1977 This tale is from Dr. H.
