Celebrating the history of Tehama County
Local newspapers are often referred to as the
historians of the community, as they record and
preserve local history.
The Daily News, and a handful of other local
papers, are no different and this year we are celebrating 125 years of documenting the history of
Red Bluff and Tehama County.
The pages included here are merely a sampling of the daily effort to inform, entertain and
educate Tehama County residents.
Newspapers spanning 125 years amount to
5.5 million pages, as a conservative estimate,
and pulling out 32 that represent the community
through the decades was no easy task.
We did not have access to the earliest editions
except on microfilm, which is problematic to
reproduce, so the pages start with the 1910s.
Each decade is represented through the 1980s —
there's less historical value and interest in more
recent editions, and leaving off the last three
decades allowed us to include more pages from
older editions most readers probably haven't
seen before.
Stories in later editions often continue on an
inside page in an effort to get as many stories on
the front page as possible — just as they do
today. In most of the instances, we have been
able to include the jumps so readers get the full
story.
While some pages include major local,
national and world events, such as key points in
World War II, we also included pages reporting
news of a fairly typical day in Tehama County.
Often we found this daily slice of life more
interesting to read than historical events with
which we are all familiar.
An effort was made to incorporate plenty of
advertising, including classified ads, and we
even serve up a couple of comics pages.
If this special edition piques your interest in
local history, there are plenty of resources at
your fingertips, including several museums, the
Kelly-Griggs House Museum, Ide Adobe State
Historical Park and a full archive of Daily News
editions on microfilm at the Tehama County
Library in Red Bluff.
As interesting as it has been to see how the
Daily News has evolved and grown through the
last century-and-a-quarter, the bigger picture of
how Red Bluff and Tehama County have passed
through history has been the real treat.
We hope you enjoy a look back at your community through the eyes of your Daily News.
