Stacey Richards and Brian Triplett got the win with 14.18, while Shane LeHew and Adam Waters picked up second with 13.05. Chad Midkiff and Rob Middelton had 12.37 to secure third. Tony Shook and Michael Fox had 11.85 and took fourth, just edging out Steve Addington and Eddie Kirby, who had 11.84. Completing the top ten were Drew and Amy Montgomery-11.55, Brian and Cody Hoyle-11.53, Brian Thrift and Andy Montgomery-11.50, Jody Wright and Lester Elton- 11.17, John Brown and Jerry Goble-10.81. It took a very respectable 9.91 to get 20th, the last money paying position. There were 64 limits weighed in, 391 fish total and a weight of 698.5. All said and done, it was a good turnout and a very well run event, which was no shock to me and all anglers, due to Ricky Peace and the crowd he has assembled for this annual event. KOSA Weather and sickness kept the Kosa retirees in the house last week. Hopefully they can get one in this week. The older doe seems to be the one I most dread seeing. I know that nothing gets past her and she will blow my cover every time. The younger bucks charge in like a bull in a china shop without very much regard for what might be around the corner. And then the big bucks have their own way of acting as well. In the last several days I have witnessed all of these truths. During a recent hunt- ing trip I saw more bucks than I have ever seen in my life. They were of all shapes and sizes even though none of the biggest ones ever got within my comfortable bow range. But seeing all of these deer gave me a great opportunity to compare their differences. One of the things I noticed was that, for the most part, the bigger bucks were un- impressed with my grunting, bleating, and rattling. While all of these worked on the smaller ones, the big ones had their own plan and were not going to be easily swayed even by familiar sounds. When I wanted to fi ght by rattling, they looked at me as if I were a spike trying to fl ex what muscles I didn’t have. When I put on a grunting se- quence, it’s if they had just heard a twelve year old boy try to sound like a mean old man. I’m also intrigued by the way God uses all of His creation to teach us about Him- self, His ways, and His people. I don’t know about you, but most of my life I have been like that young buck. I have responded to every call as if each sound was the real thing. I have treaded too close to danger and at times have made crucial mistakes. But for some reason, God has allowed me to make it through many seasons. Now, even though I am not totally immune to danger, I don’t jump at every sound and sight even though they appear to be real. I have learned just like that old buck, that if I can hear it and see it, somebody else can as well. And I might as well let a younger buck who is more interested in being fi rst than being right, jump in and check it out. If he’s wrong, I’ll live another day. And if he’s right?
