The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y., Friday, November 5, 2010 2 coverstory Relatable records Host says everyone’s a little bit country Reba McEntire and George Strait, two more country mu- sic icons, round out the list of performers. Many of the performers are also nominees this year.Lam- bert leads the list with a record-breaking nine nomina- tions. She’s up for the award for entertainer of the year,as well as best female vocalist, album and song, making her the first female artist in CMA Award history to snag nine nominations in a single year. The record has only been out- done once by a male per- former — Alan Jackson re- ceived 10 in 2002. However,Lambert could face an emotional roller- coaster during the ceremony, as she finds herself competing with her fiance, singer Blake Shelton, in three categories — best musical event, single and video. Shelton is also nominated in the male-vocal- ist category. With five CMA Award nom- Miranda Lambert will perform at this year’s CMA Awards By Kyla Brewer TV Media nce dismissed as “hill- billy music,”country is now bigger than ever. With raucous honky tonk, bawling ballads and twang- infused pop,the genre has something for everyone, from oil tycoons and cowboys to average Joes and Janes strug- gling to pay the rent. It’s time for country music entertainers and fans to cele- brate as ABC presents “The 44th Annual CMA Awards”on Wednesday,Nov. 10. Broad- cast live from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, the glitter- ing awards ceremony features fresh faces and industry leg- ends. For the third year in a row, O Brad Paisley and Carrie Under- wood team up to co-host the highly anticipated Country Music Association event. Branded “country music’s biggest night,”the CMA Awards stand out for co-host Paisley because of the poten- tial to reach out to new audi- ences. “The CMAs are different from any other awards night,” he explained.“Any new view- er will be pleasantly surprised at what they relate to on the awards ... For that reason alone, this is the most impor- tant night of the year for country music.” It’s a night for the industry to put its best foot forward, and that’s just what this year’s organizers have done. Produc- ers have lined up top-notch stars to perform between tro- phy handouts. Co-hosts Paisley and Un- derwood do double duty once again as they both plan to perform. Kenny Chesney was among the first round of performers announced, along with Dierks Bentley, Lady Antebellum and Blake Shelton. The Zac Brown Band is set to perform with CMA Awards veteran Alan Jackson, while Rascal Flatts, Sugarland,Tay- lor Swift and Keith Urban are also scheduled to hit the stage. In October,it was an- nounced that Miranda Lam- bert would team up with Sh- eryl Crow to pay tribute to legendary singer/songwriter Loretta Lynn.A country music icon, Lynn is celebrating 50 years in the music business, and Lambert and Crow are slated to perform her signa- ture song,“Coal Miner’s Daughter.” inations,Lady Antebellum has a good chance at taking home a statuette. The group is up for entertainer of the year, album of the year and single of the year, along with vocal group and video. Other notable nominees in- clude the Zac Brown Band, which snagged nods in both the entertainer and new- artists categories. The last per- son to snag nominations in both was Ricky Skaggs in 1982. Paisley clocked in with three nominations in the entertainer, male-vocalist and music-video categories.Co-host Under- wood has been nominated for female vocalist and album of the year. Interestingly, she’s up against Martina McBride and McEntire for female vocalist. If Underwood wins, she’ll tie both McBride and McEntire for the most wins in this category (three each). Chirstopher’s Coins 2 x 2 hollywoodQ&A By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: Before he was on “Hawaii Five-0,” didn’t Jack Lord co-star in a film about a Georgia family seeking gold? I think Tina Louise of “Gilligan’s Island” was in it.Do you know what it was called? A: Prior to moving, both literally and figuratively, to the islands in 1968, Jack Lord and his legendary jaw- line appeared in a fairly ex- tensive list of films and tel- evision shows, including the 1958 big-screener “God’s Little Acre.” He was part of a fairly large ensemble cast, play- ing Buck Walden, son of the gold-obsessed farmer Ty Ty Walden Walden (OK, it was just one “Walden,” but his first name really was “Ty Ty,” even in the original book by Erskine Caldwell). Despite dealing with all sorts of heavy things such as obsession, poverty and even one Marxist uprising, the film was essentially a farcical comedy, with a kind of winking sex humor that was still a few years ahead of its time. Enter Tina Louise, who made a living off that kind of unstated raciness, most notably a few years later as Ginger on “Gilligan’s Is- land.”“God’s Little Acre” was her film debut, though she’d already done a cou- ple of smallish TV guest spots. Other notables appear- ing in the film include a very young Michael Landon (playing an albino, no less), love-him-or-hate-him co- median Buddy Hackett, and “Wild Bunch” star Robert Ryan as family patriarch Ty Ty. It turns out 1958 was a busy year for Jack Lord. He appeared in three films and three TV episodes in that one year. In retrospect, it appears as if he was sowing his wild oats before settling down, because a decade later he did. He signed on to his most famous role, Det. Steve Mc- Garrett in “Hawaii Five-0,” in 1968 and he didn’t take on another screen role until 1980, when the series end- ed. Even then he only did two more things — narrate the 1980 documentary “The Whales That Wouldn’t Die,” and produce, direct and act in the 1980 telefilm “M Station:Hawaii.”This was, in fact, a “Hawaii Five- 0” spinoff of sorts,as Moe Keale appeared in both as Det.Truck Kealoha.
