In the end, the family decided to stay on the property, and they lived in their existing farmhouse while the new home was built just a few feet away. A review of the water table on the property meant they could only dig about 12 inches into the ground for the basement. Truckloads of dirt were then brought in to cover about half of what would become the exposed basement. "The basement is built so it can be lived in if we ever sell the house," Tom Halverson said. The Halversons moved into the new home in October of last year, but there are still some finishing touches to be done inside and outside. The old farmhouse was torn down in January. The home features three bedrooms, with the master bedroom on the lower level. A loft on the upper level has a view of the woods behind the house. Two dormers are featured on the front of the house, and the interior features walk-in closets and an open concept design. "It's great to live in a house where you look down on everything," Tom Halverson said of the home that was literally built from the ground up. "It looks like it belongs up north." Sue Halverson's two brothers helped with the construction, and they brought in their friends as subcontractors. Mike Pouchert, owner of Lake Country Bricklayers, handled the masonry duties, while Wally Pouchert was in charge of the sinks, countertops and bathroom projects.
