This nationally recognized award identifi es and honors out- standing and innovative community college programs in three award categories. "The ingenuity and innovation demonstrat- ed by these community colleges make them shining examples of the solutions-focused culture prevalent in these organizations," said Rose Martinez, Ph.D., director for the Bell- wether College Consortium. "The consortium looks forward to hosting 30 award-winning fi nalists at the Community College Futures Assembly." A Bellwether Finalist is a community college with a program that scores highest in the fi rst round of competition and is invited to compete in the fi nal round of award competition. Final- ists were announced recently on November 15. The Bellwether Award categories are in- structional programs and services, workforce development, and planning, governance and fi nance. Finalists in the Instructional Programs and Services category, which recognizes pro- grams and services that foster or support teaching and learning are: Reading Area Community College (CA) Hudson County Community College (NJ) Ventura College (CA) Columbia Basin College (WA) Leeward Community College (HI) Cerritos College (CA) North Florida College (FL) Allan Hancock Joint Community College District (CA) Northwest Mississippi Community College (MS) Northwood Technical College (WI) Finalists in the Workforce Development category, which identifi es strategic alliances that promote community and economic development are: Cleveland Community College (NC) Central Community College (NE) Gaston College (NC) Southside Virginia Community College (VA) St. Louis Community College (MO) Del Mar College (TX) San Antonio College (TX) Yavapai College (AZ) Nashua Community College (NH) Grand Rapids Community College (MI) Finalists in the Planning, Governance, and Finance category, which recognizes pro- grams or activities that improve college effi - ciency and effectiveness are: Bellingham Technical College (WA) Lone Star College (TX) Western Dakota Technical College (SD) Fletcher Technical Community College (LA) Stanly Community College (NC) Northeast Texas Community College (TX) Hudson County Community Colleges (NJ) Norco College (CA) Southwest Tennessee Community College (TN) Lakeshore Technical College (WI) The Bellwether College Consortium issued a call for nominations in the summer of 2023. Finalists representing 18 states and 29 com- munity colleges were selected to compete from a large pool of submissions. College teams will conduct presentations to a jury of anonymous judges and fellow community col- lege practitioners and CEOs and share how they signifi cantly addressed a critical issue affecting community colleges. Event co-spon- sors include the National Council of Instruc- tional Administrators, the National Council for State Directors of Community Colleges, and the National Council for Continuing Education and Training. The national competition will be held February 25 - 27, in San Antonio, Texas. The 2024 Bellwether Award recipients will be named at the event. The Community College Futures Assembly convenes annually as an independent nation- al forum for innovators to work as a think tank. It identifi es successful responses to critical is- sues facing the future of community colleges and hosts its national award competition an- nually.
