She was born in Cleveland County, NC, daughter of the late Larry and Kay Bess Patterson. She is survived by her husband, Matthew Melvin, of the home; children: Nikki VanDyke and hus- band, Jordan and Mathew W. Melvin, both of Kings Mountain, NC; two grand- children and siblings: Todd Patterson, Grover, NC and Angela Adams, Kings Mountain, NC. BETTY RUTH HELTON GATES Betty Ruth Helton Gates, age 93, of Bessemer City, passed away on Wednesday, November 8, 2023. She was born February 16, 1930, in Gaston County to the late June and Ada Neal Helton. In addition to her parents, KAY ROBINSON MOSS Mrs. Kay Robinson Moss, 81, of Cherryville, passed away on Tuesday, November 7, 2023. Kay was born on July 13, 1942 in Spartanburg County, SC, to the late John Darby Robinson and Mary Coffey Robinson. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a son, Charles K. "Kenny" Moss, Jr.; two sisters, Peggy Johnson, Dianne Brown and husband Charles Brown and her former husband and father of her two sons, Charles K. Moss. Survivors include her son, Chris Moss; a grandson; two brothers, Mike Robinson and wife Wanda of Shelby; and Tony Robinson and wife Brenda of Cherryville. Funeral services were held November 10, 2023, at First Wesleyan Church with Rev. Mark Poe officiating. Burial followed at City Memorial Cemetery in Cherryville. GEORGE DAVID SIMS Mr. George "Bud" David Sims, 83, of Lawndale, NC, passed away on Monday, October 30, 2023. He was born in Cleveland County, NC on December 10, 1939, to the late Earl Sims and Lillie Daniels Sims. Mr. Sims served our coun- try in the U.S. Air Force. In addition to his parents, he is pre- ceded in death by a sis- ter, Irene Porter; brothers, James Earl Sims, Matthew Sims, Jay Sims, Robert Sims, Clifton Sims, Joseph Sims, and Tyree Sims; and a grandchild. He is survived by his wife, Ms. Beatrice Sims; sons, Jonathan (Randy) Simms (Wyshena); David Dawkins, and Martin Hector; daugh- ters, Pamela Simpson, Aunyette Surratt, and Tymeka Maddox; eleven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and broth- ers, Willie Sims and Charles Sims. Born in Cherokee County, SC, she was the daughter of the late Boyd and Mattie Pearson Martin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband J.C. Hughes; brothers, David Martin and Noah Lee Martin; and sister, Wilma Lail.
