12 • Terre Haute Tribune-Star • October 29 - November 4, 2023 "MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – DEAD RECKONING PART ONE" Tom Cruise returns to action as Impossible Mis- sions Force operative Ethan Hunt, who spends the franchise's seventh entry doing more globetrotting while trying to prevent enemies from gaining con- trol of the Entity, an artificial intelligence that can cause enormous destruction. Prominent among his rivals on his assignment is a thief played by Hayley Atwell ("Marvel's Agent Carter"), who sometimes is an ally to him … but a very tenuous one. As usual, the stunt-driven sequences are huge in nature, and the title should give away that de- spite a running time of nearly three hours, the story has more to come ("Part Two" is slated for theat- rical release next June). Among other returnees from previous installments in the series are Ving Rhames, Henry Czerny, Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg and Vanessa Kirby; frequent Cruise collabo- rator Chrisopher McQuarrie directed and co-wrote the film. *** (PG-13: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD, Digital and On Demand) "Obviously, women have come a long way since the 19th century, and Amer- icans have come a long way since the 19th century, but it's still on the same continuum; we're still fighting for the same thing. We're still fighting for equality and opportunity, and we still have a long way to go but the themes are very much the same." - In an interview with Parade, Cynthia Nixon refects on how the themes of "The Gilded Age" relate to the world today. "It's three things. It's the animation process which is difficult in and of itself. Two, very complicated show. We have a larger cast than you might see in any other show. We're an hour-long animated show which is very unusual. ... And three, COVID. We debuted in 2021 and when we got the pick-up for Season 2 and 3, ... we had to figure out com- pletely new processes to work with all the restrictions that came from that." - Creator and executive produc- er Robert Kirkman explains to Collider why it took two years to make Season 2 of "Invincible." The item has incredible power that transforms Jaime into the latest in - carnation of the costumed Blue Beetle, giving him the ability to fight an enemy whose sinis- ter plans have a basis into severely strained relations between families. The story ends on something of a cliffhanger, but the picture's below-expectations box-office performance have left doubts about a sequel being made – though the major character could resurface elsewhere in the so-called DC Universe. Susan Sarandon, George Lopez, Adriana Barraza and Elpidia Carrillo also appear. DVD extras: three "making-of" documentaries. *** (PG-13: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD, Digi- tal and On Demand) "JURASSIC PARK: THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION" As the initial movie nears the end of its 30th-anniversary year, this 4K Ultra HD Steelbook set combines the six films in the franchise to date, also including the "Jurassic World" entries. The overall quality varies, but the initial, Steven Spiel- berg-directed telling of novelist Michael Crichton's story (which, not surprisingly, earned Oscars in several technical catego- ries) always is worth a view … particularly for those who can handle the scares. That film features Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum as scientists asked to verify that an industrialist's (Richard Attenborough) is- land paradise – which is a home for clones of prehistoric creatures – is safe for visitors. Chris Klein and Bryce Dallas Howard are among the stars of the "Jurassic World" chapters. **** (PG-13: P, V) "A CHRISTMAS STORY CHRISTMAS" Almost 40 years after the perennially popular "A Christmas Story" was released, this direct sequel – originally shown last year on what then was called HBO Max – returned Peter Billingsley to the Jean Shepherd-created role of Ralphie, who only wanted a Red Ryder air rifle as a gift to make his holiday complete. In his adult years, he makes a journey from Chicago back to his Indiana hometown after his father passes away, inheriting "The Old Man's" mission to make Christmas special for the family. Ian Petrella, Scott Schwartz, R.D. Robb and Zack Ward also reprise their roles from the original movie as Ran- dy, Flick, Schwartz and Farkus respective- ly, with Julie Hagerty assuming Melinda Dillon's former role as Ralphie's mother. While this doesn't have quite the magic of the first picture that continues to get annual 24-hour television marathons, it's enjoyable to see so many of its cast members reunit- ed here. *** (PG: P) "GRAN TURISMO" (NOV. 7) "FARGO" (4K ULTRA HD) (NOV. 7) "GREASE: RISE OF THE PINK LADIES" (NOV. 7) "DISNEY LEGACY ANIMATED FILM COLLECTION" (NOV. 14) "FOR ALL MANKIND: SEASON ONE" (NOV. 14) Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One" Archie Madekwe and David Harbour in "Gran Turismo" Solution on page 19
