12 • Terre Haute Tribune-Star • October 22 - 28, 2023 "MEG 2: THE TRENCH" Coming five years after the original thriller "The Meg," this sequel returns action staple Jason Statham to the role of the heroic environmentalist who finds more supposedly extinct Megalodon sharks to fight. A mining operation that ruptures a danger-harboring undersea trench plays a part in forcing others to struggle to survive, and the special-ef- fects-enhanced mayhem remains of the sort that made the first film a considerable hit. Ironically, one of the settings in the tale is called Fun Island … and many of the characters surely would call that a misnomer, given what they face there and in the surrounding area. The human cast of the American-Chinese co-production also includes Wu Jing, Cliff Curtis, Shuya Sophia Kai, Page Kennedy, Skyler Sam- uels and Sienna Guillory. *** (PG-13: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD, Digital and On Demand) "I read the article and what immedi- ately attracted me was it portrayed a healthcare system and an industry that was so far removed from anything I knew in the UK. It seemed extraordinary that these practices were taking place when it came to the whole industry of looking after people." - Director David Yates recalls the article that inspired "Pain Hustlers" in an interview with The Wrap "I haven't really watched many horror movies. I watched IT with my family about five years ago. And that was scary for me. I had to remind myself that I did not live in Derry and that Derry was not a real town, and the clown was not under my bed. But I went to the theater three or four times to see it. I was obsessed with IT." - Laya De- Leon Hayes, the star of "The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster," mentions how she became ob- sessed with "It" in an interview with Bloody Disgusting BY JAY BOBBIN Family Viewing Ratings AS Adult situations P Profanity V Violence N Nudity GV Graphic Violence "DARK WINDS: SEASON 2" Star Zahn McClarnon has won particular raves for this AMC and AMC+ series, which adapts Tony Hillerman's "Leaphorn & Chee" novels ("People of Darkness" being the main source of this sophomore round), and which recently earned a renewal for a third year. McClarnon and Kiowa Gordon play Navajo law-enforcement partners in the American Southwest of the 1970s, but they're pursuing different investigations initially here. Those eventually merge, leading the sleuths to probe a possibly dangerous cult. Jeri Ryan ("Star Trek: Voyager"), A Martinez ("Santa Barbara") and Jacqueline Byers ("Salvation") also are featured in this season. George R.R. Martin ("Game of Thrones"), Robert Redford and Hillerman's daughter Anne are among the executive producers of the show, which has been praised for integrating a hefty dose of cultural background into its mysteries. *** (Not rated: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray) "NANCY DREW: THE FINAL SEASON" The latest of the screen iterations inspired by the mystery-novel series written under the pseudonym Carolyn Keene, which has been hugely popular for generations, puts forth its recently concluded last television season – which aired on The CW – on DVD. Ev- er-curious sleuth Nancy (played by Kennedy McMann) and her "Drew Crew" try to save their coastal town from otherworldly forces, bringing many of the relationships among them to their natural – or supernatural, as the case may be – destinies. A major element for Nancy apart from her detective work is her future, if there is one, with longtime ally Ace (Alex Saxon). The cast also includes Leah Lew- is, Maddison Jaizani, Tunji Kasim, Riley Smith and Scott Wolf (the latter having directed a couple of episodes as well). *** (Not rated: AS, V) "THE BOYS: SEASON 3" The offbeat Prime Video superhero series continued by adding Jensen Ackles – who also worked with executive producer Eric Kripke during the long run of the se- ries "Supernatural" – as the supposedly deceased Soldier Boy, who has a lot of past experiences to reconcile as he resur- faces to even some long-standing scores. Homelander (Antony Starr) is very high on his list of individuals targeted for such retribution. Though the gathering of heroes known as The Boys seemingly have settled differences with their rivals, The Seven, that changes through defections and be- trayals among members of those groups. Other cast members continuing their roles include Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Erin Mori - arty, Dominique McElligott, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso and Chace Crawford. *** (Not rated: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray) "PARAMOUNT SCARES VOL. 1" In time for Halloween, the Paramount Home Entertainment label issues a 4K Ultra HD set combining several of its more popular horror titles. "Rosemary's Baby" is director Roman Polanski's 1968 chiller about a young wife (Mia Farrow) whose elderly neighbors (including one played by Oscar winner Ruth Gordon) take a particular interest in her forth- coming child; the original 1989 version of "Pet Sematary," featuring Fred Gwynne (alias TV's "Herman Munster"), adapts Stephen King's novel set largely in a particularly terri- fying graveyard; "Smile" (2022) and "Crawl" (2019) are inclusions of relatively recent vin- tage; and a fifth disc, cleverly meant to whet consumers' appetites, is a "Mystery Title" said to be a favorite among horror fans. *** (R or unrated, varying by title: AS, P, V) "MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – DEAD RECKONING PART ONE" (OCT. 31) "BLUE BEETLE" (OCT. 31) "THE ALFRED HITCHCOCK CLASSICS COLLECTION – VOLUME 3" (4K ULTRA HD) (OCT. 31) "THE COMPLETE RANKIN/BASS CHRISTMAS COLLECTION" (OCT. 31) Jason Statham in "Meg 2: The Trench" Tom Cruise in "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One" Solution on page 19
