Brainerd Dispatch • July 16 - 22, 2023 •19 "What We Do in the Shadows" - Season 5 Dig into the nightly lives of New York's most lively un- dead when Season 5 of "What We Do in the Shadows" debuts its first two episodes on Hulu Friday, July 14. Episodes stream weekly on Fridays, after their Thursday night network premiere on FX. Based on the 2014 movie of the same name by Taika Waititi ("Reserva- tion Dogs") and Jermaine Clement ("Flight of the Conchords"), the series follows a group of vampires navigating life in modern-day Staten Island, N.Y. Pick- ing back up, the new season finds Nandor (Kayvan Novak, "Archer") feeling like he's losing his familiar as Guillermo (Harvey Guillén, "Eye Candy") starts spending more time with Laszlo (Matt Berry, "The IT Crowd"). Meanwhile, Laszlo tries to solve the mystery of Guillermo's secret changes; Nadja (Natasia Deme- triou, "The Magician's Elephant," 2023), who is dealing with the effects of a supernatural hex, reconnects with her family (maybe) from the old country; Colin (Mark Proksch, "The Office") pursues a position in politics; and The Guide (Kristen Schaal, "Bob's Burgers") tries to figure out where she fits in this tight-knit group. "Betrayal: The Perfect Husband" A new true crime story comes to life on the screen when "Betrayal: The Perfect Husband," based on the hit podcast "Betrayal," from hosts Jen Faison and Andrea Gunning, premieres on Hulu Tuesday, July 11. The docuseries tells the story of Jen Faison and her "love story in reverse" (per Hulu). Thinking she had found her happily ever after with high school teacher Spencer Herron, her high school sweetheart, Jen's world comes crumbling down when she discovers that her relationship was built on lies, affairs and criminal sexual assault. The series features emotional interviews with multiple women who say they were involved with Spencer Herron, and the brave student who came for- ward to end his long line of sexual improprieties. "This three-part series is a tale of earth-shattering discover- ies, a victim's bravery and a woman's quest to reclaim her life against all odds" (Hulu). "The Perfect Husband" comes from executive producers Nancy Glass ("Race to the Bottom of the Earth," 2011), Jon Hirsch ("Heart- land Docs, DVM"), Wendy Krantz ("The Ivana Trump Story: The First Wife," 2022), Eileen Murphy ("Rogue Trip") and David Sloan ("20/20"). "Bluey" - Season 3, new episodes The fun Down Under continues when Season 3 o f the animated preschool series "Bluey" returns to Disney+ with 10 new episodes Wednesday, July 12. Full of inexhaustible energy and a lovable spirit, Blue Heeler puppy Bluey gets herself into all kinds of funny and un- predictable situations in her everyday life. Living with her mom Chilli, dad Bandit and little sister Bingo, Bluey creates elaborate games to turn even the most mun- dane activities into a fun adventure. In this new season, Bluey gets her own room, learns about the importance of promises, gets some experience in the kitchen, learns some magic tricks, deals with heavy summer rain and so much more. Hailing from Queensland, Australia's Ludo Studio, "Bluey" is written by Joe Brumm ("Causes," 2000) and directed by Richard Jef- fery ("Tinga Tinga Tales"), while Daley Pearson ("The Strange Chores"), Libbie Doherty ("Nowhere Boys"), Michael Carrington ("Floogals"), Charlie Aspinwall ("Doodles") and Henrietta Hurford-Jones ("Dog Loves Books") executive produce the show. David McCor- mack ("Five Bedrooms") and Melanie Zanetti ("Love and Monsters," 2020) voice star. Walt Disney Animation Studios Classic Shorts A collection of 27 newly restored classic shorts from Walt Disney Animation Studios are set to release for streaming – ongoing throughout the year – with six films currently available to watch now on Disney+. The shorts are set to feature Disney's original slate of characters, with iconic stars such as Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Pluto, Goofy, Donald Duck, Chip 'n Dale, and (heralded the studio's very first star) Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, all lovingly restored to their former glory in celebration of the studio's 100th anniversary. Currently, "The Skeleton Dance" (1929), "Building a Building" (1933), "Bath Day" (1946), "Figaro and Frankie" (1947), "Goofy Gymnastics" (1949) and "Aquamania" (1961) have been released on the platform, but titles such as "Barnyard Olympics" (1932), "Donald's Neph- ews" (1938), "Mickey's Steam Roller" (1934), "Playful Pluto" (1934) and "Trolley Troubles" (1927) will follow later this summer. "The Summer I Turned Pretty" - Season 2 Jenny Han's young adult romance novel trilogy makes its way back to Prime Video for another summer of romance when "The Summer I Turned Pretty" Season 2 premieres Friday, July 14. Every summer, Belly (new talent Lola Tung) counts down the days until she can return to Cousins Beach for another adventure. But this year, she's left wondering if summer will ever feel the same again. While Conrad (Christopher Briney, "Dalil- and," 2022) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno, "Walk- er") are fighting over her and tugging her heart in two different directions, the return of Susannah's (Rachel Blanchard, "Peep Show") cancer puts a dark shadow over the beach. Created by original series author Jenny Han, "The Summer I Turned Pretty" is directed by Zoe R. Cassavetes ("Broken English," 2007), Megan Griffiths ("I'll Show You Mine," 2022), Isabel Sandoval ("Tell Me Lies") and Sophia Takal ("Always Shine," 2016). Sean Kaufman ("Manifest"), Jackie Chung ("Coming Home Again," 2019), Rain Spencer ("Good Girl Jane," 2022), Summer Madison ("Emergency," 2022), Alfredo Narciso ("Manifest") and David Iacono ("The Flight Attendant") also star. "Full Circle" The brand-new Max original limited series, "Full Circle," premieres on Prime Video (alongside its home streaming platform) Thursday, July 13. Episodes air two at a time, weekly on Thursdays. Following multiple characters and cultures in present-day New York City, the series' six-episode run explores an investigation into a botched kidnapping. As the case unfolds, long- held secrets connecting a diverse group are uncovered. "Quarterback" - Season 1 In a first-of-its-kind partnership between the NFL and Netflix, fans can get up close and personal with some of their favorite stars when the new docuseries "Quarterback" premieres Wednesday, July 12. Throughout its eight-episode debut sea - son, "Quarterback" takes a unique look back at the past season, as told through the eyes of some of the National Football League's quarterbacks. Featuring exclusive access to players Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City Chiefs), Kirk Cousins (Min - nesota Vikings) and Marcus Mariota (Then of the Atlanta Falcons but currently signed by the Phila - delphia Eagles) from the beginning of the 2022 season to its conclusion. The series follows the players both on and off the field, with an unprec- edented look at the game from inside the huddle as well as the players' home lives. Produced by NFL Films, Omaha Productions and 2PM Productions, executive producers for the series include Peyton Manning ("College Bowl"), one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, as well as Ross Ketover, Pat Kelleher and Keith Cossrow (all of "All or Noth - ing: A Season with the Arizona Cardinals"). "Bird Box Barcelona" (2023) From the producers of the global phenomenon "Bird Box" (2018) comes this new "Barcelona" expansion to the sci-fi horror franchise, making its premiere on Netflix Friday, July 14. After a mysteri - ous force decimates the world's population, Sebas- tian (Mario Casas, "The Innocent") must navigate his own survival journey through the desolate streets of Barcelona. As he forms uneasy alliances with other survivors while trying to escape the city, an unexpected and even more sinister threat grows. Based on the novel by Josh Malerman ("Creepshow"), "Bird Box Barcelona" comes from directing/writing duo David Pastor and Àlex Pastor ("Incorporated").
