As a result, the Cleveland County Teen Pregnancy Prevention Coalition, in partnership with the Cleveland County Health Department, is sponsoring a Personal Care Kit Collection Drive to collect much needed personal care items for school-aged children. Items needed in- clude: deodorant, tooth- brushes, tooth paste, dental floss, bar soap, wash cloths, feminine hygiene products, and shampoo. Items can be dropped off at any of the following collection sites through- out Cleveland County: all Cleveland County YMCA branches, Cornerstone D e n t a l A s s o c i a t e s , All State Employee's Credit Unions in Cleve- land County, Big Red's Café in Kings Mountain, Shelby Women's Care, and Cleveland County Health Department. This is the second year in a row that the Teen Pregnancy Pre- vention Coalition and C l e v e l a n d C o u n t y Health Department have sponsored this drive. Last year, the drive col- lected enough donations to put together over 750 personal care kits that were provided to stu- dents attending Cleve- land County Schools. The kits were distributed by school health nurses as needs were identi- fied. "The need for these items was first brought to our attention last school year by our School Health Supervisor," said Anne Short, Director of Community Health Services and Teen Pregnancy Prevention Director for the Cleve- land County Health Department. "Students and school support staff such as counselors and social workers contacted school nurses asking for feminine hygiene and personal care products for students. We decided as a coalition that we needed to do something to help these students access the items they needed," said Short. By the end of last school year, all 750 per- sonal care kits has been distributed to students. "We hope to be able to collect just as many or more items this year so we can put the kits to- gether and deliver them to school through our school health nurses in time for the start of the 2023-24 school year," Short added. The personal care kit drive is running now through July 31st. For additional information or to make a monetary donation, please contact 980-484-5128 or Hallie. boggs@clevelandcoun- tync.gov. Personal Care Kit Drive collecting hygiene items for adolescents New State Record Confi rmed for Channel Catfi sh The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission has certifi ed a new channel catfi sh state re- cord. On May 21, 2023, Justin Hall of Reidsville reeled in a 27 lb. 7 oz. channel catfi sh, from a local farm pond near his home in Rockingham County, breaking the previous record of 26 lbs. caught in the Neuse River, July 2021. Hall has been fi shing this pond for years, but rarely caught channel catfi sh from it. Until May 2023, when his 13-year-old son caught, what he estimates to have been, a 25+ pounder. They returned it to the water, unaware of the record held at that time. "I told a friend about my son's catch, and he told me it might have been big enough to beat the state record," said Hall. A week later, using bread dough as bait and his Big Cat Fever Casting Rod and Zeb- co Big Cat XT reel, he got the record-breaker. "My wife went down to the waterline to bring it in with the net – and it bent the net." The fi sh measured 36 1/4 inches long and 24 7/8 inch- es in girth. To qualify for a N.C. Freshwater Fish State Record, anglers must catch the fi sh by rod and reel or cane pole. The fi sh must be weighed on a scale certifi ed by the N.C. Department of Ag- riculture and witnessed by at least one observ- er. It must be identifi ed by a fi sheries biologist from the Commission and the angler must sub- mit an application with a full, side-view photo of the fi sh for record certifi cation. For anglers who catch a catfi sh that doesn't quite measure up to this latest record-breakers but still meet minimum size and length require- ments, the Commission has catfi sh classifi ca- tions for its North Carolina Angler Recognition Program (NCARP). NCARP offi cially recogniz- es anglers who catch trophy-sized freshwater fi sh that do not qualify for a state record with a certifi cate featuring color reproductions of fi sh artwork by the late, renowned wildlife artist and former Commission fi sheries biologist, Duane Raver. For a list of all freshwater fi sh state records in North Carolina or more information on the State Record Fish Program, visit the Commis- sion's State Record Fish program webpage.
